  2. Book with notes from Bronte family returned to Haworth home

    A book annotated by the Bronte family has been returned to their former home in West Yorkshire. The Remains of Henry Kirke White by Robert Southey belonged to Maria Bronte, mother of Charlotte, Anne, Emily and Branwell.

    Haworth's Bronte Parsonage Museum acquired it with £200,000 from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

    It was one of a few possessions saved from a shipwreck shortly before Maria married Patrick Bronte in 1812.

    One or two evening heavy showers or thunderstorms are possible, but otherwise a fine end to the day with some warm sunshine. Any showers will soon ease, leaving it dry overnight, with largely clear skies. Perhaps the odd patch of mist.  Lows of 17c.

    Now, I'm not a militant person, but when I see someone purposefully dropping litter, I get really angry...

    But maybe I should take that anger and turn it into something more positive, like these people. This is a great article about people who are basically like the Wombles.

  7. Watch: What do passengers think of Leeds' indefinite bus strike?

    We now know that Leeds is going to be affected by yet more industrial action by First Bus staff.

    From next Tuesday drivers and other staff will walk out for an indefinite period of time.Previously the strikes have only lasted for 24 hours.

    The UNITE union accused First of taking an "extremely aggressive" stance by sacking a branch secretary and two other workers. First Leeds said the "unjustified action" would affect tens of thousands of people across the city.

  9. Mountain rescue team suffer their own accident

    The Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team had to rescue themselves yesterday, after their Land Rover overturned close to Wessenden Lodge, near Marsden on Saddleworth Moor.

    The team were up there to rescue an injured walker, who was led off the mountain to safety later on. 

    Thanks to a local farmer, the ambulance was pulled back onto its wheels and was able to be driven off the moor without further assistance.

  10. Women warned to expect jail sentences after being convicted of child cruelty

    Two women have been remanded in custody and warned they will be sent to jail on Friday for serious ill treatment of a young child. The pair locked the boy in a cupboard while they went to Blackpool and hit the boy with a metal pole.

  11. First Leeds calls strike action 'unjustified'

    Bus drivers and other workers for First Leeds are to stage an indefinite strike in a worsening row over pay.

    Bosses at First Bus said the "unjustified action" would affect tens of thousands of people across the city.

    But UNITE, the union behind the walk-out, accused First of taking an "extremely aggressive" stance by sacking a branch secretary and two other workers for "legitimate trade union activity".  

    Unite said 1,000 of its members would walk out from 02:00 next Tuesday.  

  12. Study finds that Jamie Oliver's cooking courses improves eating habits

    Scientists say cookery courses started in Leeds by Jamie Oliver have helped people improve their eating habits.

    A Leeds University study's found people who took part in the Ministry of Food courses run at Kirkgate Market started eating more fruit and veg, halved the number of snacks they ate and became more confident about cooking.

  14. Watch: Inspirational doctor reveals final wishes

    A doctor from Wakefield who's used her experience of terminal cancer as a force for change in the NHS has expressed her final wishes. 

    34-year-old Dr Kate Granger became a prolific and inspirational fundraiser after being diagnosed back in 2011. 

    She was also the force behind a campaign to improve the way doctors and nurses speak to patients.

  16. BreakingMore bus strikes for Leeds

    Bus workers in Leeds are to stage an all-out strike in a worsening row over pay. 

    Unite said 1,000 of its members employed by First West Yorkshire will walk out from next Tuesday after suspending a strike planned for last week.

    The union accused the management of taking an "extremely aggressive" stance by sacking a Unite branch secretary and two other workers.

    Unite is embroiled in a series of industrial disputes involving bus workers employed by the First Group in Glasgow, Weymouth and across Yorkshire.
