  9. Luton Airport taxi dispute: Addison Lee 'frustrated' with licensing

    Matthew Lockwood

    BBC Three Counties Radio

The new operators of the taxi service at Luton Airport say they are frustrated at the ongoing dispute with the borough council which has left 30 drivers out of work.

Addison Lee will appear before councillors on the licensing panel to discuss plans for their chauffeur-style service.

    Luton Airport

They are having to use their London-based drivers to provide temporary cover at Luton - these drivers are allowed to have tinted windows, which they get licences for from their local councils in the capital.

Addison Lee's director Michael Galvin said: "We want to use Luton drivers. We've created 15 full time jobs at Luton - local people working in our booking office.

"This is not a point of trying to bring London vehicles and London drivers up to Luton."

  10. Luton councillors to discuss airport taxi dispute

    Matthew Lockwood

    BBC Three Counties Radio

A dispute over taxi services to Luton Airport will be discussed by the borough council's Taxi & Private Hire Licensing Panel this evening.

Taxi firm Addison Lee was awarded a contract to ply for trade at the airport in April and invested in a fleet of "executive style" taxis with tinted rear windows.

    Luton Airport

The firm was awarded a standard licence for its chauffeur-style service and environmentally-friendly new vehicles, despite applying for an executive licence.

It appears the issue is the tinted windows, which are not permitted by Luton Borough Council.

This left 30 of the company's "executive service" drivers without work.

The council said it would not comment until after the meeting.
