A detective who left cards in pub toilets falsely claiming his ex-girlfriend was a prostitute has been sacked.

Ian Mangham was dismissed by Scotland Yard for discreditable conduct after a "cruel and vindictive" campaign of abuse against his former partner.

The detective sergeant, based in Barking and Dagenham, met the woman because she was a victim of domestic violence and pursued her until they began a relationship.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed today that Mangham had been sacked without notice.

  9. Watch: Giant sculpture of Rebecca Adlington appears in The Serpentine

A giant replica of two-time Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington has been installed at The Serpentine, Hyde Park.

With the 2016 Rio Olympics kicking off on 5 August, the 12ft x 40ft model was commissioned by Team GB sponsor to spur the British Olympic athletes on to a great start at the Games.

The installation shows Rebecca in front crawl position and features her wearing swimming goggles and a cap.

Lead sculptor Ian Prendergast studied hundreds of pictures of Adlington competing to ensure the sculpture reflects her front crawl technique accurately.

The sculpture is made entirely from fibre glass and took a team of three sculptures over two months to construct and using 50 litres of paint. It is equivalent in length to a double decker bus.
