  4. The Somme 100 years on: One Harrogate man's story of courage

    Elly Fiorentini

    BBC Local Live, York

What did Donald Bell from Harrogate do to get awarded the Victoria Cross in World War One?

The reason is simple: this professional footballer's actions saved many soldiers' lives.

It was an extraordinary act of bravery on the first day of the Battle of the Somme which is being commemorated today exactly 100 years on.

His story is told here by historian Lyndsay Powell, students from Harrogate Grammar - Donald's old school, and by Richard Bell, Donald's great nephew.
