    It's been a day of remembrance in West Yorkshire with services being held across the county in memory of those who died in the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago today.

    Leeds United have announced the signing of Swansea City defender Kyle Bartley.

    It comes following the news that Giuseppe Bellusci is to join the Italian team Empoli on a season-long loan.

  4. Decision date set for future of Huddersfield A&E

    Health bosses have announced a decision date on whether to go ahead with controversial plans to close Huddersfield's A&E. 

    The organisation in charge of the public consultation on the Right Care Right Time Right Place plan say a decision will be made on 20 October this year.

  5. Travel: Delays on the M1 southbound in West Yorkshire

    There's slow traffic southbound on the M1 between junction 39 in Wakefield and junction 38 at Woolley.

    It's because of an accident earlier on today. All lanes have now reopened but traffic is slow moving. 

  6. Leeds United's Guiseppe Bellusci joins Empoli

    Leeds United defender Giuseppe Bellusci has joined Italian Serie A side Empoli on a season-long loan. 

    The Italian centreback, who featured 31 times in all competitions during the last campaign, returns to his homeland due to family reasons, with a view to a permanent move due.

    Bellusci, who was a summer 2014 signing from Catania, had 61 United appearances to his name. 

  7. Yorkshire MEP backs Theresa May

    The Conservative MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, Timothy Kirkhope, has been talking to BBC Radio Leeds about his party's leadership contest.

    He says he's worked with Theresa May and thinks she would do a good job.

    David Cameron has said he intends to stand down as Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister following the UK's decision to leave the EU. 

    His successor as leader will be elected by party members with the result on 9 September. Five Conservative MPs have been confirmed as candidates.  

  8. BreakingArrests over robberies in Calderdale

    Eight people have been arrested following three robberies over the last week in Calderdale.

    Jewellers were targeted in Hebden Bridge, Halifax town centre and in Brighouse between last Friday and this Thursday.

    Seven men aged between the ages of 20 and 38, and 16-year old girl, all from Calderdale remain in police custody.

  9. Latest acts confirmed for Halifax Comedy Festival

    More comedians have been announced for this autumn's Halifax Comedy Festival.

    The festival has become an annual event and sees performances in venues all over Calderdale.

    Andrew Lawrence and James Ancaster will both perform at the town's Square Chapel Theatre.

    Jimmy Carr (pictured), Romesh Ranganathan and Al Murray have already been confirmed for the Festival which runs from 21 to 29 October.

  10. New chairman appointed by Yorkshire Ambulance Service

    The Yorkshire Ambulance Service is getting a new chairman. 

    Kathryn Lavery has been appointed to the top role from today.

    Mrs Lavery takes over from Della Cannings who stepped down from the post in May 2016 after six years as chairman at the trust.

    As leader of the Trust Board, the chairman’s role is to ensure that the service performs effectively by delivering high quality ambulance services for its local communities and making the best use of financial resources to maximise benefits for patients.  

  11. BreakingMan arrested over Leeds rape

    A man has been arrested a woman was raped in Leeds city centre yesterday.

    The 57-year-old man, from Leeds, was arrested this morning on a bus in the Greengates area of Bradford.

    He has been arrested on suspicion of rape in connection with an incident involving a 36-year-old woman near to The Palace pub, in Kirkgate, Leeds, shortly before 06:00 yesterday. 

    West Yorkshire Police say the arrest follows an appeal for information last night which received a significant response from members of the public.

  12. Police investigating hate crime allegation by Wakefield councillor

    West Yorkshire Police say they're investigation an allegation of hate crime made by a councillor in Wakefield.

    Nadeem Ahmed who represents Wakefield South said he had racial slurs made against him in the street following the UK's decision to leave the EU.

    Chief Superintendent Mabs Hussain who's District Commander for the Wakefield District at West Yorkshire Police has tweeted that his officers are now investigating and that hate crime will not be tolerated. 

  13. 'World's biggest glitter ball' set to rock Leeds

    What's being described as the world's biggest disco ball is due in Leeds tonight for a huge street party.

    The ball will be two-and-a-half times the size of a double decker bus, suspended over part of Leeds.

    The Yorkshire Festival commissioned Duke Studios to bring "the disco to end all discos" to the heart of the region. Watch this video to see what's in store:

    It's due to take place at Duke Studios from 15:00 this afternoon and runs into the evening and night as crowds are entertained by the gigantic disco ball, top DJs, performers and street food vendors.

  14. British Gas offers free electricity at weekends

    British Gas is to offer free electricity for eight hours at weekends to two million customers who have smart meters installed.

    Customers will be able to choose to use the free power either on Saturday or Sunday, between 09:00 and 17:00.

    British Gas said consumers should see savings of about £60 a year.

    But experts said it will not necessarily be the cheapest deal on the market, and advised people to shop around with other suppliers.
