Leeds and West Yorkshire breaking news

Any showers soon dying out to leave a fine evening with much of the night dry with some clear spells for a time.

Here are the latest headlines in West Yorkshire this evening:

• Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a shooting in Chapeltown yesterday evening
• Health bosses have confirmed that specialist heart surgery is to continue at Leeds General Infirmary
• Bus drivers in Leeds are on strike today, but further action planned for Monday has been called off

You may not have heard of him, but Thomas Harvey was a very important MP in his time.

The Liberal MP for Leeds West (1910-18) campaigned successfully for the rights of conscientious objectors during World War One.

Today a commemorative plaque was erected in his honour at Rydal House, his home in Headingley where he died in 1955, aged 80.

As well as an MP he was curator of the British Museum as well as being a profoundly committed Quaker.

Bus drivers for First Leeds have called off a planned strike on Monday.

One thousand workers were due to walk out following two stoppages, but Unite now say that the First Bus management have agreed to take part in negotiations over pay.

Have you seen 15-year-old Yasmin Higgins from Huddersfield? She's been missing since Monday evening.

Yasmin from Salendine Nook, was last seen on Heaton Road in Paddock. She is 5ft 6ins, thin and was wearing a black leather jacket, khaki off-the-shoulder top, black jeans and black high heel ankle boots.  

It looks like the earlier accident is going to cause some real problems tonight...

More now on the two arrests after a shooting in Chapeltown in Leeds.

Police say the 25-year-old victim is in a stable condition in hospital, his injuries are not life-threatening. 

The shooting took place in Jackie Smart Court at about 18:25 yesterday and is being treated by police as attempted murder. 

The scene is now being search by forensics officers.

Huddersfield have signed Borussia Dortmund defender Jon Gorenc Stankovic on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, understood to be about £500,000.

Slovenia Under-21 international Stankovic joined the German Bundesliga club from Domzale in 2014.

The 20-year-old is reunited with the Championship side's head coach David Wagner, who was Dortmund's second team boss from July 2011 to November 2015.

It's been a frustrating year for Rhinos' forward Stevie Ward, who's not played all season.

He picked up an injury in the match that saw Leeds lift the League Leaders' Shield. 

During his rehab he's launched an online magazine called "Mantality" to address some of the problems rugby players face - including his own struggle with depression.

Today's planned bus strike in Leeds is in full swing, but it appears this lunchtime that another, planned for Monday has been cancelled.

We're yet to hear from Unite, the union behind the strikes.

The owners of Headingley stadium say that they want to sell off greenbelt land to developers, so that they can fun improvements to their site.

People living near the land say it could damage wildlife.

We've just got a bit more information for you on the crash on the Aire Valley trunk road, a car and a lorry have been involved and a 19-year-old man has been taken to hospital by air ambulance.

We're told by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue that it's at the Silsden roundabout (pictured).

They says hundreds of homes can be built at Weetwood and Tingley and the money would be used for improvements at the Headingley stadium.

But people living near the sites argue it is greenbelt land and is part of the Urban Green Corridor and very important for green space and wildlife.
