  2. 'Neigh-bourhood' watch scheme starts in rural Beds

    Bedfordshire Police have a new string to their bow to fight rural crime and it comes with a tail, four legs and like sugar cubes.

    Horsewatch starts on Saturday and will provide "extra eyes and ears" according to the police.

    Members of Horsewatch, which is made up volunteers similar to Neighbourhood Watch schemes, are being specially trained to patrol country roads.

    They will also have distinctive clothing, provided by the British Horse Society.

  3. The Bedford cafe offering chit-chat and friendship

    A friendship group, to give lonely people the chance to meet others is starting in Bedford.

    Fay's cafe, based at the Riverside Tennis Club, will hold its first event on Saturday at 14:00.

    It will then run every Monday morning and Saturday afternoon, offering free tea, coffee cake and chat.

    Charlie Fay, who is behind the idea, said the invitation-only event is is all about "helping to get people out of the house to meet others".

    "It is not just for elderly people, but anyone who happens to be lonely," she said.

  4. Luton considers waste bin collections every two weeks

    Luton residents are being asked for their views on fortnighly bin collections.

    A report is going before Luton Borough Council’s Executive on March 5 asking councillors for approval to consult on the council’s Draft Waste Strategy 2018-2028.

  5. Beds hospital merger delay due to 'finances'

    The proposed merger of Bedford Hospital and Luton & Dunstable Hospital has been delayed.

    The plan was for it to happen by 1 April.

    The merger business case was passed to NHS Improvement (NHSI) in December.

    Both the hospital chief executives say the delay is down to "financial agreements not yet in place".

    Further meetings between the two boards are due to take place in June to review progress.
