  1. That's all for now

    That's me finished for now.

Thanks for sticking with me during the day.

Terribly sad news abut Jimmy Armfield who I'm sure will inspire many more heartfelt tributes in the coming days.

There will, of course, be more transfer news too and later on this evening Swansea host Liverpool in the Premier League.

You can keep up to date with all that over on the main BBC Sport site here.

    Thanks.

Stewart Regan, Scottish FA Chief Executive, has released a statement in response to the news about Michael O'Neill.

“The process of identifying and recruiting a new Scotland national coach remains ongoing," he said.

“The Board of the Scottish FA appointed a sub-committee to oversee the recruitment process. As part of that process, and in recognition of his work in taking Northern Ireland to UEFA Euro 2016, Michael O’Neill was identified as an obvious candidate for consideration.

“To that end, we requested permission to speak to Michael from the Irish Football Association, which was accepted. Michael and his advisers met our delegation in Edinburgh on Thursday and discussed all aspects of the role during a three-hour meeting.

“While this was a positive and cordial discussion, we respect Michael’s decision to remain loyal to Northern Ireland, with whom he has enjoyed great success.

"We now continue our recruitment process from the candidate list established by the selection committee, with a view to giving the new national coach ample time to prepare the squad for the UEFA Nations League.”

Some more reaction to Michael O'Neill's Scotland rejection here.

Gregor Cunningham: A bit of a blow for Scotland considering the biggest wage package in SFA history was turned down. However, he isn't Scottish and it's a tough job.

John Gray: How about Graeme Souness for Scotland manager. He has the passion and discipline needed to whip us into shape.

Daniel Davenport: Malchy Mackay. Come on down...

  4. 'The calmest, kindest, wisest, funniest man'

    BBC broadcaster remembers Jimmy Armfield

    Mark Pougatch

    BBC Radio 5 live

"He was a half decent player and he was voted the best right back in the world in the 1962 World Cup in Chile. It is desperately sad and a day him family were dreading, that we were all dreading and the world of football was dreading.

"He was just the calmest, kindest, wisest, funniest man. That is what I call a fabulous life in football, well lived."

  6. What next for Scotland?

    Chris McLaughlin

    BBC Sport Scotland

"There's no way of looking at this in any other way than it being a huge blow for the SFA operationally and for their reputation.

"The Northern Ireland manager was absolutely their preferred candidate from day one and despite putting their biggest ever managerial financial package on the table, they failed to get their man.

"The reasons for that will be analysed internally but searching questions will also follow publicly when the SFA responds.

"Of course attention will now turn to a plan B, but it may well now be a tricky sell given the job has already been turned down.

"There's little reason to rush given the lack of upcoming meaningful games and it may well suit those at Hampden to let the dust settle of this saga first."

More speculation is emerging as to what was behind Watford's decsion to sack Marco Silva and appoint Javi Gracia yesterday.

As we reported earlier the Hornets implied that Everton's wooing of their manager had been the catalyst for his downturn in fortunes.

You can read the full story about the Portuguese's sacking here.

Silva was the eighth Premier League manager to lose his job this season

Now The Times report that following Everton's approach for Silva in November, Watford's players had "sensed his lack of commitment" with some "even seeking to follow him to Goodison Park."

Named is Andre Carrillo, the Peruvian winger on loan at Watford from Benfica. Carrillo had previously played for Silva at Sporting CP, and The Times claim that the pair had discussed the idea of the 26-year-old moving to Merseyside.

Carrillo has made 19 appearances for Watford this season, scoring once.

We asked you what Scotland's next move should be after Michael O'Neill turned them down.

Some lively and not entirely serious replies so far.

Dale McVay: I'm sure Rab would take it.

Peter Neate: I can do every other Wednesday.

John O'Brien: Bring Alex Ferguson out of retirement.

Tim Khan: OK, ok, get them to send me the contract.

  11. LVG has congratulated Ryan Giggs

    Football

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport

Ryan Giggs was appointed Wales manager a week ago.

My understanding is that one of the people who has been in touch to congratulate Giggs on his appointment is Louis Van Gaal.

Giggs was Van Gaal's assistant during the Dutchman's two years as Manchester United boss from 2014 to 2016.

Van Gaal has not worked in football since despite receiving a number of offers.

Image caption: Right-back Jonjoe Kenny registered Everton's first shot on target on Saturday in a game they drew 1-1 with West Brom

Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny hopes he can forge a potent right-sided relationship with “top-class” Theo Walcott after the pair linked up for the first time against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

“Theo is another top-class player,” Kenny told evertontv. “It will take time for me to get to know his game – and for him to get to know mine.

“That will happen game by game, but he is a top player and a great addition to our squad."

  15. Sir Geoff Hurst on Jimmy Armfield

England World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst has also been talking about Jimmy Armfield today.

“He was the established full-back prior to the World Cup and then George (Cohen) came in, and Alf wanted to pick George," he recalled.

"He always dealt with it with great dignity, that’s typical of Jimmy.

"It must have been a huge blow not playing at that time and in the Final.

"But dealing with it over the years, there was never any bitterness, he was always part of the squad and turned up at most of the golf days.

"That could easily happen to a player who was unhappy with that part of his life.

"He continued to be part of that group right up until the last year or two.”

  19. Sir Bobby Charlton - 'I will miss Mr Blackpool' Jimmy

Sir Bobby Charlton and his wife Lady Norma have paid tribute to Jimmy Armfield
Image caption: Sir Bobby Charlton and his wife Lady Norma have paid tribute to Jimmy Armfield

Sir Bobby Charlton has released a statement in the wake of his friend Jimmy Armfield's death,

“As an opponent, team-mate and friend he was, without doubt, one of the most honest and genuine gentlemen I had the good fortune to meet," he said.

“I first got to know Jimmy during our respective national service, when we played in the same army sides. Little did I know then our paths would cross so often and it is still a privilege to think I played for Manchester United in Jimmy’s final match for Blackpool in 1971.

“As one of the first overlapping full-backs he was always a dangerous opponent. Little wonder he was regarded as the best right-back in Europe in the early 1960s.

“I was fortunate to play alongside him at the 1962 World Cup and although he didn’t play in 1966, he was never less than a positive influence on the squad as we went on to become world champions for the first – and only time.

“However, I knew the man as well as the player and it was not by chance that we stayed in touch for so long after we had both retired.

“I have missed listening to his authoritative radio commentaries and now I will miss seeing Mr Blackpool around the scene."
