  1. Good night!

    Southgate

And on that note we shall bid you all a good evening.

In the last few months Gareth Southgate has delivered England fans a 6-1 win at a World Cup, a penalty shootout win, a trip to the semi-finals and now a win away in Spain.

    You make us whole again.

  2. Post update

Next up for England: The USA in a friendly next month before they host Croatia.

  3. 'We played with courage'

    Spain 2-3 England

    England

Gareth Southgate speaking to 5 Live: "The quality of the performance was great, we played with courage, we used the ball with courage. When you come to an opponent with the quality of Spain, and try to out play them, they'll unpick you as they did in the last seven minutes. We showed real quality, quality on the counter and quality in our finishes.

"Spain are very aggressive in the way that they press, but I think all of our players were brave enough to play how we wanted to play in spite of the Spanish press. The midfielders then drew pictures and picked the pass, the players have to take credit, it's all good telling them how to play but they have to go and do it.

"I think this is a great reference for the young players, you need wins and positive experiences to give you confidence for the future. This helps with the ability to be able to talk to other players who come into the squad. We won't get carried away, we know there's lots to work on, we conceded two really poor goals but I think it will give them huge belief."

(On beating a big team) "Yes it's one less question we have to answer. The World Cup was a brilliant experience for us, we've made a big step and we had an unprecedented run of fixtures after the tournament. We've played some of the top teams in the world and with a win against Spain and a draw against Croatia, we've made progress."

    Gareth Southgate
  4. 'Sterling a great player'

    Spain 2-3 England

    Henry Winter

Chief Football Writer for the Times

    Sterling goal

Why people enjoyed tonight is seen in the third goal, England played 17 passes before they scored, they out Spain'd Spain.

Raheem Sterling was incredible, in the 4-3-3 he is so deadly cutting in off his left, under the guidance of Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta he's clearly learning so much about his game. He's always been a great player and I'm glad it's finally showing on the international stage.

  5. 'England did well'

    Spain 2-3 England

Spain boss Luis Enrique on Sky Sports: "It's very difficult to explain everything that happened in the 90 minutes. We lost the opportunity to win the match but England did very well in the first half."

On whether Jordan Pickford should have conceded a penalty: "It is very difficult to be a referee and decide in one second. It was important for England that they didn't see the penalty - that is football."

    Luis Enrique
  6. 'That’s the biggest win'

    Spain 2-3 England

England forward Marcus Rashford speaking to Sky Sports:

"It's a very tough place to come to, with the way they play the ball around.

"In the second half naturally we all want to put pressure on the back players but once they do break past that there’s a lot of running involved.

"That’s the biggest win for us, it’s a great feeling - it has a huge effect on us. There were a lot of positives but also some stuff we need to work on.

"The key was to stay close together, which was very tough with them having a lot of the ball. In the first half we managed that, in the second not so much."

  7. Post update

    Spain 2-3 England

More from Gareth Southgate: "The 4-3-3 allows us to press the ball a lot better but then you still need the courage to play, the players did that despite Spain swarming around you. If we could get out then we were a threat. The decision making was excellent for the goals and the finishing was top.

"It's difficult to find comparisons against a team on such a good run. I am delighted with what we have done and we have to keep building.

"Jordan Pickford's 'moment' is one to be discussed. We got undone with two set plays which we shouldn't. It was a great experience for the young players."

  8. 'The link up was great'

    Spain 2-3 England

    Terry Butcher

Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

The link up between all the front three was great, the movement for the goals, but they defended as a three so well, you defend from the front. Rashford and Sterling cut off the full backs and that left Kane up front who out muscled the Spanish defenders numerous times.

There was such good link up as you saw in the quality of the goals England scored, they were all incredible. If Spain would have scored them we'd have raved about them for years.

  9. Post update

    Spain 2-3 England

England boss Gareth Southgate: "There were other moments, apart from the goals, like playing into midfield and the links. Real composure from the goalkeeper all the way through the team. It was not a case of sitting, defending and hitting them on the counter, we used the game really well. We had to withstand pressure in the last 20 minutes but you accept that and we were pretty resilient. The boys can take a lot of belief.

"People have chosen to analyse the summer as they see fit. What the players achieved was incredible. The next challenge was can we advance and look at new systems and new players? Some players have emerged to give us more options. The mentality of the players and staff all week has been outstanding, they can enjoy tonight."

  10. 'The players should be proud'

    Spain 2-3 England

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate tells Sky Sports: "The players should be incredibly proud of their performance. We spoke to the forward players before the game to remind them what a threat they are and they were outstanding, causing all sorts of problems.

"Then it was up to the rest of the team to be brave and we did that really well at times. We are encouraging them to take risks. The young players put on a mature performance and withstood pressure really well."

  11. 'Really poor'

    Spain 2-3 England

Spain coach Luis Enrique: "The first half was really poor, we have to recognise that. We committed a lot of individual errors. It's a tough defeat and we have to accept it."

  12. 'Verging on exceptional'

    Spain 2-3 England

    Guillem Balague

Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 live

    Ben Chilwell

This is verging on exceptional for England, they have success at the youth ages and they now have a style of play, they now have a clear selection policy.

Even without Henderson and Stones they don't look worried, they look comfortable.

  13. 'England must take it forward'

    Spain 2-3 England

    Terry Butcher

Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

Yes we have been here before [with a good performance] but it's how we move on from this now, I think it's different to the win in Berlin in 2014.

The squad is fresher, it's younger, the players believe in Southgate, there's something different about this squad but we've still got good players like Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard to come back and it's great to win tonight.

England must take it forward, there's been too many false dawns, but Gareth in particular will keep it steady and I bet he wishes he could keep the squad together and play this weekend.

  14. Post update

A power cut in the stadium!

Oh, brief but it's back on.

  15. All over it like a Rash

    Spain 2-3 England

Marcus Rashford has scored three goals in his last four appearances for England – as many as he had in his previous 25.

    Marcus Rashford
  16. 'This has been coming'

    Spain 2-3 England

    Jordan Pickford

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford talking to BBC Radio 5 live:

"It was a great game, a game of two halves you might say. [We showed] our character and belief. We have shown the way we can play in the last few games without getting as many goals but tonight showed our character as a squad."

On starting the moves for goals:

"They weren’t direct assists, they were the start of the moves. I really enjoy that part of the game and that’s the style the manager likes to play but we can also go long with the pace we have up there."

    On a possible Spain penalty:

"I thought I was a midfielder at one stage but the ball got it stuck under my feet, Spain press high and he was right on me. I thought the only option was to try and clear it or do a Cruyff turn and it just got stuck.

"Some might say it was a penalty but the referee didn't and I didn’t give up. I cleared it and made a good challenge.

"It was a great result, character wise, this has been coming for a while, this is the start of the next hurdle for us."

  17. 'A landmark night for England'

    Spain 2-3 England

    Henry Winter

Chief Football Writer for the Times

    England goal

How good was tonight's performance? I think it bears comparison to when we played Denmark in 2002, but this Spanish team is comfortably superior to that Danish side.

It's more like the second half in 2001 in Munich, when even Heskey scored.

This is a landmark night for England.

Probably of all the tens of England games I've been to, I've enjoyed about 15, and look at the youth of the team, this is a very good Spanish team and we got the tactics spot on.

Raheem Sterling had his best game in an England shirt, Eric Dier will probably get forgotten about but he was immense in centre midfield. I'm sure the Liverpool fans enjoyed his tackle on Ramos!

  18. Richly deserved

    Spain 2-3 England

He wasn't marked too kindly during the World Cup but Raheem Sterling was your man-of-the-match tonight...

    Raheem Sterling
  19. Post update

    Spain 2-3 England

Harry Kane has been directly involved in 39% of the 44 goals England have scored under manager Gareth Southgate (14 goals, 3 assists).
