    Alex Morgan has managed more goals than any other team has managed at the World Cup so far (France next best on 4).

    She now has as many World Cup goals in total as Mia Hamm (8). Only Abby Wambach (14) and Michelle Akers (12) have scored more for United States.

    USA boss Jill Ellis: "I think the attitude was spot on, the forward produced and we kept a clean sheet. We wanted to come out and attack and we did that.

    "You want your forwards hot in a tournament and it is a great start especially for Alex Morgan. Hopefully she carries it on throug the tournament.

    "It was awesome, I was in tears watching them. It verifies who we picked. It is about building momentum and that is part of the process.

    "You want the players to leave with a good feeling, if they are in a good place mentally that is a big step."

    USA set a new record for the biggest-ever Women's World Cup win in history – surpassing Germany, who beat Argentina 11-0 in their opening game in 2007.

    They keep the run going of the reigning champion never losing their opening match at a World Cup.

    They became the third nation to score double figures at the tournament, after Switzerland (2015) and Germany (twice, in 2007 & 2015).
