Premier League reaction - wins for Man City, Liverpool, Fulham & Everton

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports: "A bad point. When the objective is to chase the top four and close the distance step by step and when you start a period of eight matches until the end of December.

"I give Palace credit but I do not just want to show that we draw because they were phenomenal. They were defensively very well organised. The goalkeeper made a couple of fantastic saves but they played their game and well.

"In the first half, we needed a bit more aggression, we found the spaces well. We were not ambitious enough or with intensity. In the second half, we need to score big chances that we had. Once more, we wasted time by allowing the game to go without us really chasing it from the first moment.

"We need to improve, I am disappointed by the performance. It is not nice to just blame the favourite in the game for not winning but praise the opponent who came here to get the point."

Southampton manager Mark Hughes, speaking to Sky Sports: "This was very similar to other games this year - the vast majority of possession and chances created. We were in the ascendancy for the vast majority but defensively we allowed them clear-cut chances that they were able to take. We need to be better in those moments. That is the only thing that is letting us down.

"We scored two great goals. Armstrong is really coming to the fore now. But overall I can't be too critical of the players. Just in key moments we weren't able to stop the ball going in to the key areas. We need to pout our bodies on the line and we were reluctant to do that.

"Come tomorrow we will get the stats back and I would think all but the one that counts will be in our favour. We have to find a way to turn that around. The squad is working extremely hard but we need to nail the key moments when we do the right thing.

"There is a bit of frustration because there are moments when we are frustrated with everybody connected with Southampton. We are a little bit too easy to score against at the moment."

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini: "Well I feel when you concede four goals, you cant win. We had as much chances as them, we play the way we must play every game. The two goals are easy goals, low crosses we cannot have but those are mistakes that we need to deal with in defence. Difficult to say when you lose 4-0 but I am happy the way we play

"I am happy with a lot of things just not result but I think that the goals are not acceptable."

On Manchester City's form: "I think they are doing a good season with so many points. It's a team team that’s very difficult to create chances against. I hope they continue in this way they fight for every title and they deserve to do."

Raheem Sterling speaking to Match of the Day: "The game was not easy they had couple of good opportunities to make the game more interesting so the result looks easy but they had their chances.

"We have got a great understanding me and Leroy [Sane] we try to get into positions when we see each other on ball.

"The thing we have with this squad is you have to give your best because there are other people in squad who deserve to start.

Credit to the manager though, games like this coming back from an international break can be difficult, yet we could have done more and we should have done more.

All I can say is, we are trying to improve and do better last season and we need to keep improving and win games. We need to be squeaky clean at the back."

Cardiff captain Sean Morrison: “We had a game plan, they have a lot of pace and power up front so we knew they would dominate possession. But we limited their chances and had a few half chances ourselves, but we’ve come away with a loss.

“We need to put the ball in the back of the net. There were a couple of balls that didn’t drop to us in the penalty area. But we keep going, we just have to dust ourselves off and go again.

“The last month we have been improving and we are in most of the games we play. If we can tidy up at the top of the pitch hopefully results will change.”

Everton manager Marco Silva speaking to BBC Sport: “The most important thing was the three points. The First half was not the best performance, we started slow. We should do things faster against teams like this who are strong in defence.

“It was different in the second half, we started to create more problems. But every moment we didn’t score the game is always open, that is the Premier League.

“We were mature and competent. We should have scored the second to kill the match, but we deserved the three points. We were the better team.

"The players are working really hard, all together with good spirit, and that is what I want.

“We are happy. We will analyse the match and then prepare for the next one, like we always do.”

Southampton boss Mark Hughes, speaking to Match of the Day: "We have had similar stories in other games we have played. We scored a good goal and then all of a sudden we find ourselves behind in a game we dominated. The two goals are poor from our point of view. We talk about fundamentals until we are blue in the face. We allowed Mitrovic too much space on two occasions. We are not allowing ourselves to benefit from our good play. Sometimes you just need to put your foot through it.

"You look back on the game and we are scratching our heads considering what we produced.

"We have got to create more clear-cut chances. We get plenty of shots off as an away team but we need to make sure we pick our moments. We are not quite converting enough.

"I don't think there is a huge amount wrong with how we are going about our business. For the most part we need to keep on going and the key moments that define a result we are better in."

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson tells BBC Sport: "I am happy indeed. We have played like this in the last four against and in each of the games come out thinking we actually played well. On a luckier day, we could have got more. I am proud of the players' performance, I cannot ask for more. The shape and discipline was as good has it has ever been and we had some good chances on the counter.

"Towards the end they played more directness with Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku on and it put more stress on the backline. They were throwing balls into the box but we dealt with it will. They did not create that many chances were I thought they would score.

"We had two great opportunities and on a normal day they would have been converted. This is is Old Trafford, we are Crystal Palace and we lost 4-0 here last season. This year we have drawn 0-0 and most people would say we were worth it and could have won it.

"I got asked about the players' confidence but it is quite high. We have played well and shown we can match teams. We are taking the game to teams and it is toe-to-toe stuff. If a team can do that, I believe we are good enough to stay in the league."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to Match of the Day's Gary Lineker: "If you see the result which was 0-4 especially after the international break it is good, you see Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester United they struggle.

"The players train in a different way, so it is difficult to come back, I give a lot of credit for win but was not our best performance, West Ham have chances and they don't score we were quite lucky but we will come back to our best.

"I said to the players the most important thing is that despite what we achieved we still need to be consistent.

We are a humble team and today we weren't at our best, too many touches, our passing was not good enough but our running was fantastic.

"City have provided me with a great squad and if you want to compete again, you have to play good every time you play."

On the busy Christmas schedule: "I have good member of staff with me and they know a when they have to give days off and the exact quality and intensity of training sessions especially now every three days there is a game."

West Ham forward Michail Antonio, speaking to Sky Sports: "We had a few chances me and Marko, it was just one of those things it just was not our day hopefully we can pick ourselves up. It was a positive game the score doesn’t suggest how we played, they had four good opportunities and took all of them.

"There are loads of positives and so what we have to do as a side is move on. The gaffer’s mentality is be play like you’re a big team, so we go out to win always wanting to get the three points.

"The tactics worked but they’re a quality team they had four chances, and scored four goals, I don’t think our goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański had to make a save, now we move on to next game.

"It’s easy for me to say we could have done better, but I’m just going to say they’re a quality side and they took their opportunities and we didn’t take ours it’s in the past so we move on.

"I felt like they are, but also there’s Liverpool, Chelsea and that is why the Premier League is the best league in world.

"Like I said, they didn’t run away with the game, they took their chances they weren’t all over us and as soon as they got the lead they just kept ball, but the only negative is the score line."

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock: “They were better than us in that final third but I thought we did well. There were two incidents before the goal that I wasn’t happy with. I thought Kadeem Harris was fouled and then the throw-in with Harry Arter, it comes off their player, the referee should see that.

"Little things like that have gone against us but you can’t fault the players, they gave everything.

"If we were just a little bit more clinical, that’s where we let ourselves down. That’s why we are looking for players in January, but I can’t fault the players out there today.”

Watford manager Javi Gracia speaking to the Premier League

"The game was closer than the scoreline. We tried, we did a good defensive job for 66 minutes and after that the game changed. We had opportunities and didn’t take them. Everyone knows Liverpool is a great team.

"I prefer not to speak about refereeing decisions we accept something that is difficult to accept but we do it and there is nothing else we can do.

"We could do better in the first half on the counter attack maybe we could do better but playing against Liverpool is always very demanding.

"If I do (sign a new contract) it is because I am optimistic, I can feel the ambition of the club and I feel happy training here."

Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri, speaking to Match of the Day: "I feel good. It was important to come back and come back with a victory. It is a little step but important for the enthusiasm and everything.

"For me Mitrovic is one of the best goalscorers in Europe. He can do everything in his career.

"It is important to continue in this way. Now we have to forget what we did and improve. Next is Chelsea and it is important to maintain ambition and mentality.

"I am confident with my team. I asked them to make a lot of crosses for Mitrovic because he is amazing in the box. We made some good things but we have to work hard to improve on defence. We will be happy when we get clean sheets.

"I was just thinking of this match, which was crucial. Now I forget Southampton and think of Chelsea."

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling: "It feels like a loss, it pretty much was. One point or no points was no difference for us.

"We needed more intensity and for one of the chances to go in. We got more frustrated as the game went on.

"We knew before this game all the home games we have. We knew we had to be in the top four by Christmas. We cannot have any more days like this. We have to stick together as a team, everyone is very disappointed."

Southampton goalscorer Stuart Armstrong, speaking to Sky Sports: "We felt it was a very good team performance. We created a number of chances but let in an easy equaliser. To end with nothing is bitterly disappointing. As a group we felt good about the game. There were so many good points but ultimately it is about the result and that wasn't there.

"We still have believe in the group. Sometimes you need luck. The Premier League is clinical and teams are taking chances against us.

"It is about the team, getting points and getting up the league."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BBC Sport:

"I think it (the result) tells the story because we stayed stubborn, they defended and counter attacked so we had a few really good moments we didn’t score which is not a big problem if we stay on track. How we closed down the game was just brilliant especially the third goal. The first goal was brilliant football and the free kick from Trent (Alexander-Arnold) was a dream. It was a good game against a good side.

"We only have difficult places to go to, and Watford is especially difficult. The points they have is no coincidence so coming here you are never allowed to take a win for granted. Work rate was brilliant, the tactics were good as it is always so difficult to find a solution to the defence.

"All these things we are working on and after an international break it is not easy to remember all of them.

"I saw it on the pitch but I couldn’t really see it so have no idea if it was (a penalty) or not. They were angry about it.

"It happens. Jordan Henderson was not happy about his mistake but what a guy he is. He has a heart like this so sometimes it leads you on the wrong path. We wanted to change him but we were a little bit too late!"

Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri, speaking to Sky Sports: "I am very pleased. First match and first victory. It is a little step but an important step for everybody. It was important we made a good solution and good mistakes. We had to work hard. It could have been more for us or for them.

"When we went down I said I wanted to see how we created and that was very good. Amazing. It is OK. This is the spirit that I like. I like what they did but of course we have to work more and more."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho BBC Sport: "Frustrating. The objective was to start well this period of eight matches until December. We did not win one point, we lost two.

"We knew where they close down and knew where the spaces were, we did not have enough aggression or intensity to kill. We gave the opponent time to have he ball and did not press enough. We gave them moments to breath, relax and for the time to go. We did not press enough.

"Confidence or urgency is in the last part of the game. You go direct, go for long balls and for the second balls in the dangerous positions. We did not start with a lack of conference but extra confidence. When you are at home, you want to win it and you keep going until you do.

"The objective is to try to improve the team and players with difference characteristics to game the dynamic of the game."

Liverpool's goalscorer Trent Alexander-Arnold speaking to the Premier League

"They had big chances in the first half and we struggled to create chances but we persevered which is the good thing about this team this year. We are happy to come away with the three points.

"There was a bit more pressure on me as I have had a few and haven't scored. I know Henderson wanted it. He gave the ball to me and I hit it, that's why we celebrated so passionately because we had a joke before the game that he might take one.

"The aim is to be as involved as possible especially as we grow as a team and get the results on board. After the international break we have set a marker down and hopefully we will be able to build on that.

"A lot of people might look towards Manchester City and Chelsea games but it's every game and if you come away with draws when you feel like you should win that is where you will go wrong .We have another massive game at the weekend."
