Italy coach Conor O'Shea: "I'm proud of the fight, we were taking a pounding but we scrapped to the end. When you give away that many penalties, you are in trouble but you saw ambition to the end.
"This is a long, hard road, we have to improve and we will turn the corner. You come here preparing to win but it will take a few days to digest. We will grow and grow and grow and we will have the last laugh.
"We never said we would win grand slams but we are working hard to make us a strong rugby country."

Italy captain Sergio Parisse speaking on BBC One:
"It was a tough game for us but the performance wasn't too bad, The French team were under a lot of pressure and when they scored in the second half they gained in confidence.
"Our defence were much better. We have to keep going, keep working, it is difficult when you lose but we have two more games to try and get a win in the tournament."

Here's Italy's late consolation. But it won't be much comfort to Conor O'Shea and his men.
Italy sit rock bottom of the Six Nations table, with a new record to their name - they are on a run of 15 consecutive Six Nations defeats.

Well, that might not have been a high-tempo match, but I'm exhausted having typed out Mathieu Bastareaud all evening. Too many vowels.
But he was the difference as France secured their first win of the 2018 Six Nations.
Reaction from the players to come, so stay tuned...

I'm really glad for Mathieu Bastareaud, he had a great night and was the best player on the pitch. He was the difference between the teams.

Not to be. That's it in Marseille.
France - with a much better second half - consign a poor Italian side to their 15th-straight defeat.

France 34-10 Italy
Italy are heading for a 15th-straight defeat in the Six Nations, their worst ever record.
And France are away again.
New scrum-half Baptiste Couilloud floats a beautiful pass out to Benjamin Fall on the wing but his ball inside is poor and that's another handling error from the hosts in a crucial part of the field.
Nine in total from France this evening, to seven from Italy.
Converted try - France 34-10 Italy
Mathieu Bastareaud, con Trinh-Duc
The big man has his try. No more than he deserves.
A superb break from number eight Marco Tauleigne sets up the score, before Mathieu Bastareaud buries through three Italian forwards to dump the ball down over the whitewash. Pure strength from the centre on his return, and it caps an excellent performance from the Toulon forward.
Francois Trinh-Duc, the new kicker, slots one over. This is now an easy victory for France after a less-than impressive first 40.

But the players want their first win in eight games, and posts it is.
That's Maxime Machenaud's last action of the game as 19-year-old scrum-half Baptiste Couilloud comes onto the field for his first cap.
