  1. A demain

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

Right, get to bed you lot.

We've got a showstopping Saturday tomorrow and after that long 80 minutes, you'll need your rest.

I'm back from 13:00 GMT tomorrow ahead of Ireland v Wales (14:15) and England v Scotland (16:45). All the build-up, all the tries, all the fun.

    Bonne nuit mes amis.

  2. Post update

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

    France try

If you're just tuning in, I'd suggest you scroll all the way back through my live text. Some witty bits in there.

But if you're pushed for time, here's a succinct match report.

In short, Mathieu Bastareaud impressed on his as France picked up a comfortable win at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

After a turbulent two weeks, Jacques Brunel has his first win as France head coach under his belt, finally.

  3. 'We were taking a pounding'

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

    Italy

Italy coach Conor O'Shea: "I'm proud of the fight, we were taking a pounding but we scrapped to the end. When you give away that many penalties, you are in trouble but you saw ambition to the end.

"This is a long, hard road, we have to improve and we will turn the corner. You come here preparing to win but it will take a few days to digest. We will grow and grow and grow and we will have the last laugh.

"We never said we would win grand slams but we are working hard to make us a strong rugby country."

  4. 'France were under a lot of pressure'

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

    Parisse

Italy captain Sergio Parisse speaking on BBC One:

"It was a tough game for us but the performance wasn't too bad, The French team were under a lot of pressure and when they scored in the second half they gained in confidence.

"Our defence were much better. We have to keep going, keep working, it is difficult when you lose but we have two more games to try and get a win in the tournament."

  5. WATCH: Minozzi scores late try

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

Here's Italy's late consolation. But it won't be much comfort to Conor O'Shea and his men.

Italy sit rock bottom of the Six Nations table, with a new record to their name - they are on a run of 15 consecutive Six Nations defeats.

  6. Post update

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

Well, that might not have been a high-tempo match, but I'm exhausted having typed out Mathieu Bastareaud all evening. Too many vowels.

But he was the difference as France secured their first win of the 2018 Six Nations.

Reaction from the players to come, so stay tuned...

  7. 'The difference maker'

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

    Chris Ashton

Toulon and former England winger on BBC One

    Mathieu Bastareaud

I'm really glad for Mathieu Bastareaud, he had a great night and was the best player on the pitch. He was the difference between the teams.

Anon: Both teams poor but remember France are stripped of a tonne of key players and mired in controversy. They will get better.

We're a friendly bunch here. Include your names please...

  9. WATCH: Bastareaud finally gets his try

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

After setting up one score, Toulon centre Bastareaud finally gets one if his own after a hard day's graft.

He gets my vote for man of the match.

  10. 'A win is a win'

    FT: France 34-17 Italy

    Philippe Saint-Andre

Former France coach on BBC One

We should have scored the bonus point but it's a win. It will be a huge game against England in two weeks.

  11. Full-time

    France 34-17 Italy

Not to be. That's it in Marseille.

France - with a much better second half - consign a poor Italian side to their 15th-straight defeat.

  12. Post update

    France 34-17 Italy

Is this heading for 100 minutes again?

Wayne Barnes goes to his pocket in the 82nd-minute. Luca Bigi is sent to the bin for a deliberate knock-on.

In Paris last year, Wales had a man sent to the bin shortly after the 80th minute, and he made it back onto the field...

  13. Post update

    France 34-17 Italy

The clock's on red but France want their fourth try. Mathieu Bastareaud charges at the line, but we'll come back for the penalty.

Bastareaud is the captain, and he tells his side to tap-and-go.

  14. Post update

    France 34-17 Italy

Italy scrum-half Marcello Violi has picked up an injury but the visitors will have to finish this game with 14 men, they've used all their subs.

At least they're not claiming an HIA...

  15. Converted - France 34-17 Italy

    Matteo Minozzi, con Canna

France were after the bonus-point score, but it's Italy with the try.

Jayden Hayward with a lovely break from deep and with France complaining about a knock-on, Matteo Minozzi crosses the try-line for Italy's second of the match.

And there's the quick conversion from Carlo Canna.

  16. Post update

    France 34-10 Italy

Italy are heading for a 15th-straight defeat in the Six Nations, their worst ever record.

    And France are away again.

New scrum-half Baptiste Couilloud floats a beautiful pass out to Benjamin Fall on the wing but his ball inside is poor and that's another handling error from the hosts in a crucial part of the field.

Nine in total from France this evening, to seven from Italy.

  17. Converted try - France 34-10 Italy

    Mathieu Bastareaud, con Trinh-Duc

The big man has his try. No more than he deserves.

A superb break from number eight Marco Tauleigne sets up the score, before Mathieu Bastareaud buries through three Italian forwards to dump the ball down over the whitewash. Pure strength from the centre on his return, and it caps an excellent performance from the Toulon forward.

Francois Trinh-Duc, the new kicker, slots one over. This is now an easy victory for France after a less-than impressive first 40.

    Bastareaud scores try
  18. Penalty - France 27-10 Italy

    Maxime Machenaud

Boos from the crowd. They want another try.

But the players want their first win in eight games, and posts it is.

That's Maxime Machenaud's last action of the game as 19-year-old scrum-half Baptiste Couilloud comes onto the field for his first cap.

  19. WATCH: Bonneval strenghtens France lead with try

    France 24-10 Italy

In a match full of handling errors, dodgy scrums and missed opportunities, this was a ray of sunshine from France.

Have a watch, it's worth it.

  20. Post update

    France 24-10 Italy

Gael Fickou, remember him? The Toulouse centre never quite lived up to the hype a few years ago, but he's back to relaunch his career.

I'm expecting big things in this final 15 minutes.
