I don't think England can save this, unless the rain comes. You look at the history of Test match cricket and very rarely do you save it from here. Pakistan will bowl better than England have bowled.

England created chances but didn't take them. We've seen one or two keep low, Amir, Abbas and Ali will bowl that fuller length with a bit of skid so it's not going to be easy for the England batsmen.

Pakistan have a lead of 166 with two wickets in hand - one of which is Babar Azam, who took a nasty knock on the wrist earlier and had to retire hurt on 68.

Maybe one reason Cook has dropped a couple is one minute he is at short-leg under the helmet and the next he is back at slip again. There is no hard and fast rule for who fields where but there is a rhythm to the game.

Five dropped catches - three out of the five should have been taken so it could have a different situation. They will be scratching their heads. In the winter it was Australia and the Kookaburra ball, then they got found out in New Zealand. Now they are in their own back yard with a Duke ball and there is no excuse.

England don't lose home matches in May. It's not doing a great deal for Trevor Bayliss as coach because that team today looked like they need coaching.

South Africa coach Mickey Arthur on Sky Sports: "We've had two good days and we'll enjoy them, but we've got a hell of a lot of work still to do.

"Preparation was good but execution is another thing. I couldn't be more proud of my bowlers.

"We wanted runs from everybody. I'm really pleased with the way we fought. If we can get another 25 on top of that and do exactly what we did in the first innings - bowl in the right areas and apply some pressure - then we've got a really good chance."

England don't have any kind of foundation with batting, bowling and fielding it's been a mismatch. Mark Wood was building pressure with three dot balls and then they went short. They are not prepared to do it for long periods.

I got too funky with my fields and it was a lesson to me that in English conditions you can keep it simple, very rarely do you have to think outside the box. England went out of the box too soon where it was a day for being basic.

England bowler Mark Wood, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was hard toil from our point of view. They just kept getting scores. If we could have got two or three in a cluster that would have helped but they kept getting scores.

"I felt at times we beat the bat a lot. So far, they've out-bowled and out-batted us.

Did you get the lengths right? "Probably not as consistently as we would have liked. It's a pitch where if you put the ball around the top of off stump, something happens. A hard day's graft.

Today was more startling. There were tactical errors: too short too soon and they didn't stick to the basics. You feel with this England side they do not have the patience to do it for long enough. They get bored of being boring. You have to be attritional in these conditions.

Five dropped catches for England, though, hasn't made a difficult task any easier.

The maturity Pakistan have shown for two days here in May, when there has been cloud around... the discipline this inexperienced side has shown has been tremendous.

As for Pakistan, they had four players register half-centuries - only Alastair Cook passed 50 for England - and they timed their innings incredibly well.

England look like a side that needs oiling, they are not well coached. There are the slip cordon changes every other over.

Some positives from today?

Ben Stokes was excellent with the ball: 3-75 from his 22 overs.

England have been well and truly outplayed again today. It shows through the fielding, Pakistan clung on to everything and it makes you seem together as a side. They have done the basics better than England.

A lead of 166 on a pitch that is only going to get worse, England have got to somehow go out and get 400.
