  1. 'If we're spared...'

    FT: Colombia 1-2 Japan

Thanks as ever for your company and your comments - yes, even the chap who suggested I was a moron for writing 'soz' instead of 'sorry'. That's the passion of the World Cup for you.

I'll leave you with three pieces you might want to check out. To paraphrase what Sarah Kennedy always used to say at the end of her Radio 2 show: "We'll see you soon - if we're spared."

Another reference for the kids, there.

  2. Epilogue

    Colombia 1-2 Japan

So what have we learned today?

Well, maybe changing your manager two months before a tournament isn't quite the disruption we might have thought.

Carlos Sanchez has goalkeeping skills he kept to himself during his stint with Aston Villa.

Keisuke Honda may not be able to tear around for 90 minutes any more, but he still delivers a mean set-piece.

And this World Cup is continuing with its capacity to surprise us.

  3. Late start on Sunday

    Colombia 1-2 Japan

Indeed, Tim. The good news for Colombia's early risers is that their next game kicks off six hours later in the day.

    Tim Vickery

BBC Sport South American football expert

Imagine waking up at seven o'clock - that's the time in Colombia - and watching your side lose to Japan. Colombia got themselves back into it but full credit for the way Japan approached the second half.

  5. Watch and read - the key moments

    FT: Colombia 1-2 Japan

We've got the highlights ready for you (if you're in the UK) - Steve Wilson and Kevin Kilbane are on commentary.

Patrick Jennings' report from Saransk is also up on the site. Always happy news when the stadium wi-fi is working.

Paul: With Japan winning, this has blown Group H wide open.

Jamie: This World Cup is full of surprises, got another great game again this afternoon. Not a dull moment from Saransk. IMO best of the tournament so far.

  7. 'Japan didn't need to work for goals'

    FT: Colombia 1-2 Japan

    Matthew Upson

Former Arsenal defender on BBC One

Japan didn't have to work very hard to score either of their goals. That will be a real disappointment for Colombia.

Lukas Podolski, the former Germany striker, plays his club football in Japan these days, with Vissel Kobe.

John Bennett doesn't, but he's very knowledgeable, and we like him.

  9. Post update

    FT: Colombia 1-2 Japan

Colombia, meanwhile, have work to do before they return to Kazan - where they are based - to play Poland on Sunday.

I spoke before the game about Jose Pekerman's reputation for making questionable substitutions. He will feel that he had to sacrifice Juan Cuadrado - and bring on Wilmar Barrios - to bolster midfield after Carlos Sanchez's red card. I'm not sure every Colombian will agree with him, though.

  10. Post update

    FT: Colombia 1-2 Japan

Japan deserve a great deal of credit for the way they came through that one. Yes, the early red card for Carlos Sanchez helped them - but they were wobbling at half-time after conceding that free-kick equaliser to Juan Quintero, and they responded superbly.

It hasn't been an easy few days for Japan. As manager Akira Nishino indicated before the match, the players were affected by the news of Monday's earthquake in Osaka, which killed three people. In addition, the players did not get much sleep on Sunday night after an alarm went off at their hotel.

They showed great strength of character in Saransk today, and that will give them hope before they play Senegal in Ekaterinburg on Sunday.

  11. 'Japan have the potential to progess'

    FT: Colombia 1-2 Japan

    Leon Osman

Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Colombia going down to 10 men so early played a big part in the outcome.

Japan have got some really good players. They're very experienced and play at a high level across Europe. Yes, they had a man extra but they were probing and on the front foot.

Sometimes it just needs a bit of confidence to advance in the tournament, which they will get from this game.

  12. How Honda made the difference

    Colombia 1-2 Japan

    Keisuke Honda

Keisuke Honda's touchmap is fascinating. Nothing inside the Colombia penalty area - but take a look at that one top right. That was the corner that produced Japan's winning goal.

  13. 'Japan made advantage count'

    FT: Colombia 1-2 Japan

    Phil Neville

Former England & Man Utd defender on BBC One

Japan deserved it in the second half after Colombia dominated the first. Japan made their man advantage count and got control of the ball. We didn't see anything of Falcao and Rodriguez in the second half.

  14. Post update

    FT: Colombia 1-2 Japan

I can't imagine Colombia's defenders will rate too highly. Davinson Sanchez looked wobbly throughout, while Santiago Arias was caught out as Yuya Osako headed in Japan's winning goal.

Keisuke Honda made a difference when he came on. He may not have the stamina of his glory days, but my goodness, he can still make a difference.

Gabe: Tale of two managers here. Taking off Cuadrado was moronic. Bringing on Honda was a masterstroke.

Tim: I’ve been really impressed with Nagatomo for Japan plays with confidence and a no nonsense approach. Very efficient. Possible man of the match contender?

  17. FULL-TIME

    Colombia 1-2 Japan

Who said changing your manager two months before a tournament would leave you in chaos? Well done Japan.

  18. Post update

    Colombia 1-2 Japan

But Japan do lose the ball, and concede a free-kick, quickly taken - Carlos Bacca has the chance to deliver a cross, but overhits it by a mile. That would be in the rough from the first tee...

  19. Post update

    Colombia 1-2 Japan

Japan will win this if they're sensible in possession now. Keep the ball, don't do anything silly, and the three points are yours...
