World Cup 2018: West Ham's Manuel Lanzini out of Argentina squad

West Ham's Argentina midfielder Manuel Lanzini will miss the World Cup after suffering a ruptured anterior knee ligament injury in training.

Lanzini was named in Jorge Sampaoli's 23-man squad last month.

The 25-year-old made 27 appearances for West Ham in the Premier League last season, scoring five goals.

Argentina begin their World Cup campaign against Iceland on 16 June before games against Croatia and Nigeria in Group D.

Lanzini started Argentina's 4-0 friendly win over Haiti last week.

Ever Banega, Lucas Biglia, Angel Di Maria, Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Pavon, Maximiliano Meza and Eduardo Salvio are the other midfielders in Sampaoli's squad.

Sampaoli is already without Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who also has a knee injury, and has replaced him with Tigres' Nahuel Guzman.

Argentina have yet to announce a replacement for Lanzini.

Really bad timing for a horrible injury. Hope he recovers quickly WHOEVER he plays for.

Gutted for him, was looking like he might have made the starting eleven too.

ANYONE who spouts mockery and criticism regarding personal misfortune should be embarrassed at the least for their small-minded attitude. An athlete anticipating entering the biggest arena in their professional life having to deal with what was until a few years ago a career-ending injury is not an opportunity for ignorant comments believing sarcasm is at best witty. Absolutely gutted for him. Has done so well to earn his place in the squad up against strong competition, so close to the competition as well. Wish him all the best for a speedy recovery and strength to get through what will be a tough time.
I'm a West Ham fan btw. It's obviously bad news for the club, but nowhere near as bad as it is for Manu on a personal level.

some people are so insensitive. south Americans take pride in representing their country unlike some English players, so this would have meant the world to him. he is a very good player and underrated imo. but they have left put icardi so that isn't a bad replacement if they choose him
