Manchester City win at Arsenal - reaction

Arsenal manager Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The result was 2-0 but I think on the pitch over the 90 minutes we were getting better.

"The first half we didn't play like we wanted. We spoke at half-time about taking more responsibility for the second half, to do a little more. We wanted to build with the ball and break their lines. I think in the second half we played more like we want."

On 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi: "It's his first match here in the Premier League. He has personality and quality and if he is on the pitch he is improving very quickly.

On the atmosphere: "We wanted to start here with our supporters. We wanted to show our performance but it is clear against Manchester City we could not give them this win. But I think here we are going to feel very well."

Gweedo: The richest team wins. It was Chelsea now it’s Man City. Simple economics wins you the title. Shame but that’s the modern game.

Dan: Never mind the result, the worrying thing is that Arsenal didn’t even make city work for that victory. The loss was almost going to be inevitable, but the performance and the same defensive frailties shouldn’t be, especially considering the managerial change.

Mac, a very frustrated Arsenal fan: Absolutely shocking display. Cech distribution is awful and it's a disaster waiting to happen. We have to start Leno next game,

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I couldn't wait for my holidays to finish. I needed to get back and I'm really happy I could be involved today. I wanted to play and it's great that we got three points.

"We did the job we needed to do. There were some scary patches but it's a great start to come here and get three points.

On Riyad Mahrez: "He is a player who will improve pretty much every team he goes to. His quality on the ball is huge and he is a player that wins matches."

On targets this season: "It's about having a winning mentality that the manager is trying to install in us. We have to keep doing these things. We can't just be happy with the Premier League last season. That's gone now - we need new challenges."

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva, speaking to Sky Sports: "We're very happy to start the Premier League with a win against such a strong team. We wanted to be professional and we did it. We defended very well and we beat them. I think we were better than them tonight."

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's the first game of the season and we wanted to start well."

Asked about his goal celebration, Sterling added: "There's a lot of talking and I just put the celebration in there. It means nothing. I have just got to keep improving and doing well. We've just got to focus on ourselves and we need to get these games out of the way one by one."

"Every season is a major season and this game was complicated but we played at a high level. We created a lot of chances and out performance was good. We keep going.

"We are satisfied for many, many reasons.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to BBC Match of the Day:

Was it a perfect performance? "Yes. We have a lot of players with a lack of condition but we are more than two seasons together and know what to do. We made a good performance in general and day by day we will get better and better.

"I am privileged to be manager of Manchester City. We try to do our best always. Manchester City have given me a fantastic squad. I cannot complain for one minute."

James: Some positives from that Arsenal display. Didn't capitulate like last season.

Lewis Keeffe: Calm down it's only game 1! Emery will come good. He deserves the chance and it's not his fault he's started on the hardest team in the league versus his bogey manager who he hasn't beaten. Ever. This is no measurement of Arsenal's progress.

Daniel Cheng: Well we couldn't have expected much from a new manager in his first competitive game in charge against the PL champions who amassed 100 points last season. Roll on Emery's army.

The special one: This is going to be a very long season yet again

Hassan Fayyaz: Arsenal starting from where they ended their last season.

Chris Hickman: Arsenal already making progress under Emery. They only lost 2-0 at home to City this season.

City have laid down their marker on the Premier League with this performance. People could dismiss it as same old Arsenal which would be unfair in Unai Emery's first game. You have to say it though, they were outclassed in every department today.

City could have won by many more had they been more ruthless. Pep Guardiola has been in the City hotseat for two years - this was Emery's first game and it will take a while for him to change things.It was good to see that the mentality of the supporters has changed though. Full stadium, optimism in the stands as there should be.

Arsenal keeper Petr Cech speaking to BBC Sport: "We feel that we could have got something from the game. In the second half, we forced them to make mistakes and we had some opportunities. Unfortunately, we lacked invention to find the killer pass.

"When you play against a team of City’s quality and confidence it is always going to be difficult. Inevitably, you can make a few mistakes.

"It was a shame we couldn’t finish off our counter attacks and overall we’re disappointed with the defeat."

All over, champions City start with all three points, plenty of work to do for Unai Emery and Arsenal.

Kevin de Bruyne turns and smashes a shot from 30 yards out which is brilliantly tipped over the bar by Petr Cech.

Let's not judge Arsenal on this performance against the best team in the land. I think they have shown grit, resolve and desire but I have been disappointed with them in the final third.
