That one could come down to yellow cards too...

Roshimon: Congratulations Japan. I'm very happy for you. Proud moment for the whole of Japan as well as Asia
Abdulateef: I see nothing wrong with Japan qualifying on fair play, the rules are there and they are through because of it.
'An embarrassing 10 minutes'
Japan 0-1 Poland
Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Two
We’ve had a wonderful World Cup. Some of the games have been incredibly exciting. We’ve had a bit of everything with VAR as well.
But that was embarrassing the way the teams went about that final 10 minutes. It was everything we don’t want to see in the World Cup. It turned into a farce.

Vaslly: There must be a better way to decide a group. A spitting contest or the two coach's arm wrestling perhaps.

'Hasebe slowed the game down'
Japan 0-1 Poland
Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Two
They brought on Hasebe for a centre forward, and he was slowing the game down. He kept highlighting the fact that his team were winning on yellow cards and told all his team-mates to slow down.
It really set the tone for the last five or six minutes of the game. Both teams sat back and didn't really want to press the ball. It fizzled into a really poor ending.

'Japan's plan almost back-fired'
Japan 0-1 Poland
Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Two
Japan were poor, not at the races. If you make six changes you are going to find it difficult. Nishino obviously expected Colombia to win that game, he left out some of his big players and it almost backfired on them.
'Mind-boggling from Japan'
Japan 0-1 Poland
Michael O'Neill
Northern Ireland manager on BBC Two
It takes you back to watching games from 1982, 1986, we saw Austria and Germany play out a game like that for even longer.
It is mind-boggling for me as a coach to leave your whole destiny in the hands of what can happen in the other game.
I developed a soft spot for Japan, but I hope they get battered in the next round.
Confirmation Japan are through
FT: Japan 0-1 Poland
Heart-breaking for Senegal because they are going home based on the fact they received two more yellow cards in the group stages.
Wow.
This is how close it was:
Japan
Points: 4Goal difference: 0Goals for: 4Yellow cards: 4
Senegal
Points: 4Goal difference: 0Goals for: 4Yellow cards: 6

Wayne: Fair play is a really stupid way to decide qualification, must be a better way than this?
David: How about a penalty shootout on the day off? Free entry for fans.
James: Teams should progress on positivity - attempts on target, penalties won, etc. Not on the interpretation of referees.
Um, who do you think decides if it's a penalty...

The goal that knocked Senegal out of the World Cup...

It was even stranger than West Germany v Austria, because Japan could still have been knocked out if Senegal had scored in the other game - yet a goal for themselves would have guaranteed their last-16 spot.

Simon: That was one of the most surreal 10 minutes of football I've ever seen... Literally neither team interested in doing anything!
Daniel: These last three mins in Japan v Poland game is actually embarrassing for football tbh. Should not come down to fair play there needs to be another system

Wow. Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill just said he hopes Japan "get battered" in the next round after that.
The next round will be against England - if they finish above Belgium tonight. Of course that could also be decided by yellow cards...

So just to clarify, Japan have gone through because they had four players booked - and Senegal had six yellows in their three games.
The two countries were level on points, goal difference and goals scored. So the next decider was fair play. If Japan had received two more yellows, it would go to drawing of lots. If they'd had a player sent off, they'd have been out and Senegal would have been through.
