  1. 'Liverpool on the verge of something really good'

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on BT Sport: "I'm happy for them. You see the emotion on James Milner's face there, he's been immense. You see the celebrations in the crowd and I know what it means. I know the following this club has got.

"These fans just want this club to compete and they want to be proud of their team. This manager has got them flying, if they go one step further this could be the start of something special under this manager. I think they're on the verge of something really, really good."

Ex-Reds defender Mark Lawrenson on BBC Radio 5 live: "No-one says anything about Philippe Coutinho anymore. I actually thought when he left it might unsettle Roberto Firmino with his mate leaving, but actually, he has stepped up to the plate and been brilliant.

"The two young full-backs [Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold] have seriously improved. Loris Karius is relatively inexperienced so maybe we shouldn't be too surprised they have conceded the goals tonight. But the experience they have gained from nights like this will be invaluable. Jurgen Klopp has improved all of his players.

"If we said at the start of the game, Roma would win 4-2, we would have got locked up. It was a game that was so open and that's a slight worry. Going forward, Liverpool are unstoppable but they do have mad moments defensively. If they can cure that moving forward they will be an excellent team."

Ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport: "It's great to see this but as an ex-Manchester United player it's frightening. This could be the start of something.

"Real Madrid will be thinking 'we have to be on it'. History will suggest Real are favorites but they can come unstuck against this team."

  2. Goodnight

Thanks for joining me on an epic night for fans of Liverpool, Roma and just about everyone else too.

The Champions League has done it again.

And let me leave you with some of the best punditry from tonight's game.

  3. Post update

With 13 goals over the two legs, this is the highest ever scoring Champions League semi-final, overtaking Monaco v Juventus (4-6) in 1998.

Clint: For all those people saying we can't see a game out, true but that's because Klopp as fallen into the trap of 'game management' - you're in the lead with 10 minutes to go, take off an attacker... Liverpool can't play containing football. Just keep attacking.

  5. 'Forza Roma always'

Roma legend Francesco Totti, now a club director, has tweeted: "Our Champions League campaign ends with a victory - one battled for, chased and sought right until the final whistle. We reached the semi-finals on merit, through hard work. It is an achievement to build on. Forza Roma always!"

  6. Post update

Liverpool have scored 20 away goals in the Champions League this season, a joint-record in a single campaign in the competition (level with Real Madrid 2013-14).

The Reds also became the third team to score 40 goals within a single season in the Champions League, after Barcelona (45 in 1999-00) and Real Madrid (41 in 2013-14).

  7. Post update

Ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport earlier: "It's great to see this but as an ex-Manchester United player it's frightening. This could be the start of something.

"Real Madrid will be thinking 'we have to be on it'. History will suggest Real are favorites but they can come unstuck against this team."

  8. The fans' view from Rome

Some Liverpool fans in Rome - who still haven't been let out of the ground - have been speaking to BBC Radio 5 live

Josh: "The party is slowly starting to die down now. My voice is wrecked from singing all night.

"Liverpool have just got to play their football in the final. We want to play against the best teams in Europe and Real Madrid are exactly that. We need to get into a rhythm and I’m convinced we can beat anyone on the planet. I’m fairly sure I’ll be in Kiev on that night."

Neil: "It was a terrific night. It was a matter of hanging on a bit even though the penalty was late, but the way those young men celebrated with us after winning the game for Liverpool was brilliant.

"The pinnacle of football should be the hardest night of your lives and to defend any lead at the Stadio Olimpico is hard to achieve. So Liverpool can keep making it difficult for themselves because it is difficult and that’s why it’s worth achieving it. The place to be will be Kiev that night and I’ll be going.

"No idea how long we will be kept in the ground tonight – they don’t tell you those of things but I’ve got a flight at 03:30 so hopefully soon."

  9. Post update

Not that it matters for much now, but Radja Nainggolan scored his first two Champions League goals tonight.

He is the first Belgian player to score two goals in a semi-final or final of the Champions League.

  10. Who said he was boring?

FT: Roma 4-2 Liverpool (6-7 agg)

    James Milner tweets
  11. Roma president furious with refereeing

Roma president Jim Pallotta believes it will be an "absolute joke" if the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is not introduced into the Champions League.

"It is very clear VAR is needed in the Champions League because you just can't let stuff like this happen.

"You can all look at it yourself. Stephan El Shaarawy in the 49th minute wasn't offside and he gets taken down by the goalie; the 63rd minute was a handball that was obvious to everyone probably in the world except people on the pitch; the 67th minute Schick gets taken down in the box.

"I know it is difficult to ref but it is really embarrassing that we lose on aggregate like that.

"By the way, it should have been a red card which would have been 10 men in the 63rd minute.

"Liverpool are a great team, congratulations going forward, but if they don't get VAR in the Champions League stuff like this is an absolute joke."

  12. Post update

Sadio Mane’s strike was his ninth in the Champions League in just his 10th appearance – no player has scored more in their opening 10 games in the competition (level with Harry Kane and Simone Inzaghi).

  15. Post update

  16. 'It was crazy, I forgot the score'

More from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BT Sport: "We are deserved finalists 100%. You don’t come without luck. We needed it only one time tonight. Real Madrid needed luck yesterday too. That’s how it is.

“We have two very important Premier League games then let's go there [the final] and try our best.

“The boys deserve it, the character they showed, the football they showed - it was just crazy. I forgot the score! It was 7-6 right? Unbelievable!"

On his poor finals record: “We should start winning but I know that. Everyone will remind me now from now on that I have lost the last five finals but we will try and go there again."

  17. 'More exciting than I wanted'

FT: Roma 4-2 Liverpool (6-7 agg)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: “The game was wild. They took all the risks and we punished it with the counter-attack but then we gave away a goal.

“There was lots of space. But then our last line was too deep and you cannot play like this. Each counter-attack was really dangerous for us but we didn’t use this. We were a little too patient. We are usually much better - you know this.

“It was the first semi-final for most of the boys so normal to have to keep nerves in. It was a little bit exciting – more exciting than I actually wanted."

  18. Post update

There is a scenario where fourth place in the Premier League - Tottenham currently - don't qualify for the Champions League next season.

If Liverpool win the Champions League and drop out of the top four (which is still possible - if Chelsea beat them this weekend, the gap is down to three points and the Blues have a game in hand) and Arsenal win the Europa League, then England have reached the maximum of five teams you can have in the competition.

As if Spurs fans needed another reason to want Arsenal to lose to Atletico Madrid tomorrow...
