Lewis Hamilton won the Mexican Grand Prix with a superbly controlled drive in a tactical fight with Ferrari to move to the brink of the world title.

Hamilton will clinch his sixth championship at the US Grand Prix next Sunday as long as he does not lose more than 22 points to Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton triumphed in a tense, slow-burn race of divergent strategies between the four Mercedes and Ferrari drivers. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was second, ahead of Bottas and Charles Leclerc.

The four men closed up in the final laps as their different tactics came together.

More from Sebastian Vettel, who came second: "When you start on the front row you always fight for the victory and today we did but it seems we just couldn't fight hard enough because we didn't have the speed to force the victory despite our chosen strategy.

"I think Lewis had it all to lose and we expected his hard tyres to hit a cliff but he never did so we didn't get beat in strategy terms and I would say they got a bit lucky and also has the speed."

When asked by the interviewer if Mercedes earned the win because they took more risks than Ferrari, Vettel says: "We are taking risks but there is not point in being stupid, stopping at that part of the race was a brave move and it could have worked out either way but it worked well for them strategy wise and in the end they had the speed as well."

Christian Horner looks like he wants to settle down on the sofa in his Red Bull pyjamas after a long hard day at the office. He tells Sky Sports: "We had a very quick race car today, it's a real shame... Max had a very strong drive to come back to P6, it's frustrating because we could've had a good result today.

"Yesterday we have already covered [on Verstappen's three-place grid penalty] I still think we could've recovered today, he was racing hard with Lewis - for me that's not a racing incident and he got very unlucky with a puncture. Some days things just don't go your way and another day he would've been a hero.

"It was a pretty decent race from Alex, we went for a two-stop. He lost a lot for time with a McLaren, otherwise he would've had an undercut on Lewis. He's still learning and still adapting and he's getting closer and closer."

Sergio Perez drove incredibly in front of his home crowd and finished in seventh, in the traditional 'best of the rest' - excluding Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

When asked by Johnny Herbert about how he managed to pull off his first stint of 51 laps on the hard tyres, Perez says: "It was very hard because Renault were also very strong on the first stint and they came very close to us on the strategy but I managed to save the younger tyres till the end of the race."

When Johnny Herbert asked him how seventh place and being 'best of the rest' felt for him.

Perez says: "It's a victory to me and I'm very happy with that."

Very much talking up Ferrari there from the boss Mattia Binotto. They started one-two. They finished two-four. That says it all.

Some words about strategy from the Ferrari team boss - the Italian Mattia Binotto says: "I think what we did was right but you look at it now at the end of the race from a different perspective. They did the right choice, it's difficult for us to defend and the the tyres overheating when you are following and trying to attack.

"[For Charles' one-stop strategy] at that stage of the race was too early and looking at our data from yesterday we didn't consider the one-stop, looking now that wasn't the right choice.

"We lost some time at the pitstop with Charles, he could've been a lot closer to the cars at the end of the race. Here in Mexico we know that as in Budapest the maximum downforce is what we need, and it shows we have closed the gap quite a lot."

Max Verstappen's weekend saw him qualify first, get demoted to fourth, get up to third, drop to 20th, finish sixth. Standard weekend for him.

Red Bull's Alexander Albon comes fifth and when asked on his team's choice in strategy says: "To be honest I don't think it would have been that bad, we could have done the two-stop but we got held up with Carlos in the pit lane and lost 6 seconds."

When asked on his feelings after what has been a great race and what his strategy was heading down to turn 1, he says: "It was my best race pace wise and the top guys weren't that far ahead in the end, at the start I aimed to keep it clean but be aggressive, that happened and I came out in third."

Thirty years ago, Ayrton Senna won the Mexican GP for McLaren, beating Riccardo Patrese's Williams.

Not sure what he was describing here to five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio over dinner, but the Argentine clearly thought it was yet another questionable overtake.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, finished just off the podium in fourth. Speaking to Sky Sports' Rachel Brookes, he says: "The second stint was not particularly great I didn't feel good on the medium compound - I don't know why - the first medium felt better we did the first stop earlier to cover Albon and we knew it would be a two-stop early, but then everyone else did a one-stop.

"I think I need to do some work in the race especially on the strategy has not been that good but I need to come on the radio and help the team make the right decision like Seb did."
