Arsenal lose at home to Brighton & Newcastle win - reaction

That's a mathematical way of saying this Arsenal team is not as good as the one that went a season unbeaten.

Arsenal have faced 52 shots on target in Premier League home games this season – in the entire Invincibles season in 2003-04, they allowed just 48 opposition shots on target at home.

Graham Potter, for what it's worth, is super impressive isn't he? Chris Hughton did a great job and as I mentioned earlier Brighton may not do much better than last season points wise but I know which team I'd rather watch.

West Ham (a) next Monday then Standard Liege (a), Man City (h) and Everton (a).

Arsenal interim manager Freddie Ljungberg: "Of course it's disappointing but we've got to keep on going. The players are low on confidence, I think you can see that. There was a little bit of a reaction in the second half, but you've got to start games like that.

"We're in a difficult situation, we've lost a lot of games and the confidence has gone down. We started the game flat with no energy. It's my job to get them to be aggressive and play with energy."

Arsenal boss Freddie Ljungberg: "It was tough. We didn't show up in the first half, didn't work hard and want to play. You can't start like that.

"Second half we had a word and were better but we are suspect on the counter and we have no confidence. We gave them 45 minutes at home. I need to work on that and get confidence back into the boys.

"It's a concern for any coach, a lack of confidence.

"At half time we said 'This is not Arsenal, we have to give it a crack.' That's what I want to see from them."

Freddie Ljungberg says he doesn't know when a manager will be appointed - he's taking it game by game.

You can hardly hear Freddie Ljungberg speak and he's standing in a cupboard. Punctured by Premier League management already. It puts years on you quicker than a stint inside Number 10.

Brighton manager Graham Potter: "I'm delighted. It's a wonderful feeling now. We've had three tough games and not got any points. It's a nice feeling.

"First half we did really well and did some good things. We pressed and defended well. We kept the ball and tried to create something things. You have to respond, when you come away to a place like this there's going to a response. We dug in, I'm very pleased.

"It's a nice moment for us. It gives us a little bit of belief. It was a good game for us, not perfect but we showed real courage and belief.

"Credit to our players, they did what I think an away team has to do in terms of frustrating but it still takes courage from the players and that's what I'm pleased with."

On the winning goal: "It was a nice finish and a great ball. Aaron Mooy was great all game I thought, he was unselfish with his play. I thought all the players were fantastic."

Brighton boss Graham Potter: "We had lots of quality and courage. You have to survive moments in games like this and we did.

"I am very proud. The players were fantastic. We've played five of the big six away from home and it's not easy, that's the nature of the beast. It's a fantastic night for us."

Freddie Ljungberg is not very experienced in terms of full management. He's managed youth teams but to step into this situation as your first job is very difficult to cope with.

Kyle: No surprise to see Arsenal getting beat. Defensively they are a shambles. David Luiz in a back four is a liability. Sokratis is awful too. Kolasinac shouldn't be playing. Tierney is miles better than him. Arsenal are average at best.

Nobody is taking responsibility and it's running throughout the whole club. Brighton had Chris Hughton and went with Graham Potter but that's about being proactive as a club. They felt they needed a new direction.

Arsenal didn't do that, they allowed it to play out and they've now got a big situation to try and turn around.

Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin to Amazon: "I don't know what to say. I have the feeling that whatever we do it doesn't come out right. The team gave its best, we created chances, we defended good but it seems like we need so many chances to score and teams score every chance against us. I am lost for words a little bit.

"Every single player has given 100%. When we go out on to the pitch we want to win and give our best. I feel that our team was full of energy, it's hard to take. We have to keep going, I am sure 100% that results will come.

"Football is like life sometimes, you go through ups and downs. I have won trophies here, had good seasons and bad seasons.

"Freddie has helped the team a lot this week. He has added a lot of energy to the dressing room."

I know Arsenal spent quite a lot of money this summer. Who's behind the recruitment? Who is making those decisions? It feels so disjointed.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce: "I was delighted with the spirit of the players.To come here has never been easy over a number of years. Chris Wilder has done a remarkable job."

On the second goal: "Down the line we are going to have a few that will go against us. I have to say well done to Jonjo for keeping on going. If that is an opportunity the linesman keeps his flag down because it looked borderline. Maybe he could have kept the flag down and checked later. Ultimately it was the correct decision.

"The referee will not blow the whistle and he has done that. Usually it is clear and obvious for the linesman to put his flag up but let's remind everyone it was the second goal, which wasn't important anyway.

"I will never take anything for granted but we are doing OK. We have got off to a good start, let's hope it will continue."

All four sides on display tonight much of a muchness.

Brighton thoroughly deserved it. Aaron Connolly is a constant pest. They've got a bit of belief. It's not a smash and grab, they've been confident and they've controlled big parts of this game. It's a big step for Brighton.

"I'm delighted with the way my team played. Newcastle sit in and make it difficult for you. I'm delighted for Steve, I've got a lot of time and respect for him.

"You can't ever take positives out of a defeat. We played well enough. If we got ourselves back in I fancied us."
