Barty wins French Open - radio & text

French Open champion Ashleigh Barty: "To Marketa, it's been an incredible two weeks. Your whole season has been brilliant. No doubt you will be in Grand Slam finals in the future.

"To the French federation and sponsors - incredible changes to Roland Garros. You fans make this tournament so special. You're so passionate and enthusiastic. It's great playing tennis on these beautiful courts.

"To my team, thanks for sticking with me. It's been such a journey the past three years - let's celebrate tonight."

Marketa Vondrousova used her speech after the trophy presentation to say 'hi' to her mum, before adding:

"Congratulations Ashleigh, you gave me a lesson today so thank you.

"You are an amazing player and such a nice person so you deserve this.

"Even though I didn't get the win today, I enjoyed my time here and am happy with everything that happened here.

"Thanks to my team. You work really hard and it's amazing what we did here. I'm really grateful for you and you're so special to me."

Two members of the Roland Garros staff are frantically pointing at Ash Barty to turn to her left for the snappers on that side of the court.

They're like a pair of cops, trying to divert traffic.

The pointing gets quicker and more frenzied as the clock ticks in this slick ceremony... finally Barty sees them and turns around.

Phew!

The Australian national anthem plays. Barty decides not to sing, probably a safe choice given she's stood on a podium all on her own.

Rousing music plays out on Chatrier as Barty poses for pictures with her new silverware.

Ashleigh Barty is up next.

She lifts the trophy into the air and the Chatrier crowd cheers before the Australian hugs it into her chest.

Marketa Vondrousova is up next to collect her runners-up trophy. Fair play to the Czech 19-year-old, she's got a big smile on her face.

A lineswoman comes up to receive a silver plate from Evert. Presumably for all her work over the past two weeks.

Nope, seven-time French Open champion Chris Evert gets the flowers. She will do the trophy presentation.

But first, we get a video summing up her career.

A ball boy has a bouquet of flowers that is as big as his entire torso. Assuming those will be Barty's soon.

Two Aussies (I presume) in the crowd have a yellow and green sign which says 'Barty Party'. It certainly is.

The ball boys and girls file onto the court, followed by the linesmen and women. They'll run out of space on there soon.

Hordes of people come onto Chatrier as they set up for the trophy presentation.

Meanwhile, Vondrousova is in her chair on her phone.

We knew Barty had the variety, but could she use it strategically time and time again? She did.

I think Barty has such a good understanding of herself. She's found that love for the game. When she goes through tough situations she doesn't panic or is rattled. She worked her way through each stumbling block that would have stopped a lot of other players.

Barty said on court after the match:

"It's unbelievable. I played the perfect match today. I'm so proud of myself and my team. It's been a crazy two weeks.

"I was very nervous. Marketa's had an amazing season. She's only just started her climb. She'll be in many more Grand Slam finals I'm sure.

"It's a special place for Australian players so I'm incredibly proud of what I've been able to achieve and it's been an incredible two weeks."

It certainly could not have happened to a better person. Well liked and you feel like she deserves it. Retired for almost two years then returned. It was an impressive effort from Barty.

She played such a disciplined match today.

Barty's compatriots will appreciate her wrapping that up in an hour and ten minutes.

It's pretty late over in Australia.
