Fifa Women's World Cup: 'Unacceptable behaviour' - reaction to England's remarkable last-16 win

England boss Phil Neville described Cameroon's behaviour as "unacceptable" and said the game "didn't feel like football".

He was also worried about the impact it will have on young girls watching the game.

The Cameroon players didn't leave the pitch at half-time for several minutes - instead gathering in the centre while their coach tried to get them into the tunnel.

There were reports of complaints of racism from the players but that was later denied by Alain Djeumfa.

Then, shortly after the half-time break, Cameroon had a goal disallowed for offside and Ajara Nchout was in tears.

Alex Greenwood scored England third after a few nervy moments at the back.

And the match ended on a sour note as Alexandra Takounda Engolo was booked for a horrific tackle on Steph Houghton.

I'll leave you with a quick re-cap (if that's even possible) of what happened if you have tuned in late.

Firstly, England were awarded a free-kick inside the box for a back pass. Captain Steph Houghton coolly put the Lionesses ahead.

Ellen White then doubled England's lead with a clinical finish inside the left post. A VAR review showed she was clearly onside and the goal was allowed to stand.

However, the Cameroon players reacted wildly to a freeze-frame shown in the stadium and whole-heartedly disagreed with the decision.

They protested on the pitch and refused to re-start the match, with the referee appearing to lose control of the situation.

"Embarrassing for the women's game."

Hatters: England will struggle I think against Norway, they look a good side.

James Bramwell: Why would you show compassion to a team that showed no respect for the rules or opposition? They were an utter disgrace.

Caesar: If the backpass rule - unclear in this instant vs Cameroon, - was enforced against England, many wouldn’t be laughing now.

This Cameroon team, they don't have the resources. They don't have the quality coaching in their country, they don't have the experience like England or somebody like Phil Neville.

"We have to try and understand that. Perhaps they weren't even told about the rules, the laws of the game and the evolution of the game.

"So your heart has to go out a little bit to this Cameroon side. They played with emotions and brought this emotion to the tournament.

"As much as we want to see a little bit more class from Cameroon, they did bring that beautiful emotion and packed this entire stadium.

"You have to look at it both ways.

There is more football to be played today, believe it or not.

Wow. That's some speech from Phil Neville.

Hopefully Steph Houghton's injury is nothing serious. What a loss the centre-back would be if she is forced to miss the quarter-final with Norway.

England boss Phil Neville has come into the press conference and without a question being asked, said he had something to say:

"I want to speak first. One: Steph Houghton was player of the match and can't be here as she's on the treatment table, from the tackle that everyone saw. She needs to recover, she’s in a lot of pain. It’s not Fifa’s fault, this time.

"Secondly, I came to this World Cup to be successful and to play a part in making women's football globally more visible. We wanted to put on a show. I sat through 90 minutes of football there and felt ashamed. I was proud of performances, under circumstances I’ve never seen before. And I am completely and utterly ashamed of the opposition. I didn’t enjoy the game. My players didn’t enjoy the game, apart from getting to the quarter-finals.

"All the young boys and girls watching...and we’ve had five, six and seven million people watching back at home against Cameroon with that kind of behavior. That’s pretty sad. I’ve got to tell the truth to everyone. I’m so proud of their behaviour. It takes you back to times when you went home crying with your ball."

Former England captain and current Manchester United Women manager Casey Stoney has praised Phil Neville's players.

This was a big moment for left-back Alex Greenwood. It also settled the nerves after a shaky start to the second half from England!

It was the two scousers who combined - Toni Duggan to Greenwood from the set-piece.

England's Alex Greenwood, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm absolutely delighted with the result. It was a really professional performance and I cannot wait for the quarter-final against Norway."

What did you make of Cameroon?

"It is what it is. These things happen. We cannot control what they do and we have to make sure we focus on ourselves and make sure we are professional. I think we did that.

"VAR is part of the game and people aren't always going to agree. It is there for a reason."

Did you think Cameroon's players would walk off?

"I didn't even think about it."

Cameroon boss Alain Djeumfa says the referee "made a lot of mistakes" and that there had been "a miscarriage of justice".

He refused to specifically explain which aspects of decisions they were unhappy with.

But he did deny reports that Cameroon's complaints had any racial basis, saying no when asked if they were accusing Fifa or VAR of racial bias, which had been reported at half-time.

Peter Shields: Disgraceful behaviour from Cameroon BUT I have to say, the off side rule is ludicrous, I thought she was level - surely there has to be more evidence of a clear offside to rule the goal out ? The Ref was awful, she choked on a definite England penalty & red card.
