  1. Post update

OK that is all from us. I'll leave you with a reminder of MOTD tonight while you can read all the reaction to the Manchester derby below.

  2. 'Not time to think about title race'

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "We concede three or four counter attacks in the first half, they were clinical but I am more than happy for our performance. We pushed them, we created chances. In general I am happy with the performance. No regrets.

"I know who we are as a team. I am delighted to work with these guys. W tried and we tried in the second half. Unfortunate we scored late and could not turn the result.

"It is not time to think about that. We have to think about what we have to do and think about the next game. Doesn't matter if six, eight or 14 points we have to continue. We are a fantastic team."

  3. 'I congratulate my team'

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Yes we lost 1-2 but I congratulate my team, my players were fantastic, we are a fantastic team.

"They are so fast, so quick and sometimes when you lose the ball it is more difficult. We tried, we got to the last third many, many times and they can run. Maybe a but more than usual."

On the title race: "We have to try to continue, there are many things to play for. It's difficult because the opponents are on an incredible run winning 15 games out of 16.

On reports of racism and it not being acceptable: "Of course not. I think the club are making a statement and I support that."

  4. 'You have to stick with the manager and the process'

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford speaking to BBC MOTD:

"Especially in the first half it was enjoyable to play in. It's a tremendous feeling, we could have come in at half time three or four goals up.

"The boys were tremendous today, every single player, the challenge is to continue that. It was a good counter-attacking set-up and display, the negative is it was only good for 30-40 minutes. They have a lot of top quality players, and it can take it out of your legs a bit."

On his penalty: "I tried to stay calm and get the first goal. It's an important moment in the game, the main thing is it put us in a good position as a team. I had one from Fred that I misplaced and had one off the bar, so that could have been three or four goals up."

"It's been an inconsistent start to the season, it's a young team, and we've been trying to get the right fundamentals and the only way to get consistency is to go through these hard times. You have to stick with the manager and process. If we do that we've got something to be excited about in the future."

On reports of racism: "We seem to be speaking about it an awful lot over last six to eight months. Even speaking about it now is not nice. The necessary departments need to do the right things to stop it in the game. It is a big negative in the sport and the country."

  5. Post update

There are two champions in action tonight in Europe's top five leagues.

Lionel Messi presented his sixth Ballon d'Or to the Nou Camp before Barcelona's game against Mallorca, which has just kicked off.

And former Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus visit Lazio.

Follow both games in our live text commentary here.

  6. Man City's swift response

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

    Simon Stone

BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City deserve credit for the speed with which they have released that statement.

Football is a game that arouses passions, which is part of its charm. But there is a line that should not be crossed and those who do deserve to be punished.

  7. Title challenge 'will be difficult'

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

Manchester City defender Kyle Walker, speaking to Sky Sports: "Us as defenders need to hold our hands up. We need to keep clean sheets and strikers maybe need to put more away. They had a game plan and it worked. They have quick players in quick areas and they are going to hurt you on the counter. Credit where credit is due, they stepped up today. Fair play.

"Can't fault the manager. He has won numerous trophies. I can't put my finger on it. It is going to be difficult, Liverpool are on fire. They are getting wins and we are not. It is a big gap but we will fight until the end."

  8. 'It's unacceptable'

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

More from the Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"The team shape was spot on, but individually they had to dig deep against some of the best players in the world. That's part of the game. It was a memorable night for Aaron [Wan Bissaka] who has been unbelievable since coming to club.

"You defend so well but you are disappointed that you concede on a corner, which is not their strength but I can't complain to much.

"David de Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world. We've expected high standards off him and he is getting back to his best.

On reports of racist abuse: "I've seen it on the video, it was Jesse and Fred and the fella must be ashamed of himself. It's unacceptable and I hope he will not be watching any football anymore."

  9. Man City statement on alleged racist abuse

Manchester City have released a statement regarding the alleged racist abuse.

The club says: "Manchester City are aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show a supporter making racial gestures during the second half of the match against Manchester United this evening.

"Officials from the Club are working with Greater Manchester Police in order to help them identify any individuals concerned and assist with their enquiries.

"The Club are also working with GMP regarding an instance of objects being thrown onto the field of play."The Club operates a zero tolerance policy regarding discrimination of any kind, and anyone found guilty of racial abuse will be banned from the club for life."

  10. Post update

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"We'll remember this one, we look so dangerous when we get he ball and go forward against arguably the best team in the world.

"They are an unbelievable team team and to get a result and defend like we did and create as many chances...we should have been three or four up but for some good goalkeeping.

"It's hard to take the ball off them. They can football teams to death but with the pace and threat we have, we look dangerous every time we go forward.

"It does not matter where you win the ball it's that you are positive when you get it."

  11. 'We were frightening on the break'

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was always going to be difficult against a top team and some world-class players but we were frightening on the break.

"That gave us a platform and we withstood some pressure in the second half. We knew we had a plan and that first 30 minutes epitomised everything we spoke about. It was nice to see that pay.

"This year is has not also been the case but that shows how when you work hard it comes off.

"The second half was tough, we had to withstand lots of pressure with the way they play.

"It is a sweet one and celebrating like that in front of the fans is a beautiful thing."

  12. Kick It Out offer support after alleged racist abuse

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

This was a thrilling derby but sadly there appears to have been an incident of racist abuse, with a supporter appearing to make a monkey gesture towards a Manchester United player in the second half.

It is an incident the PA news agency understands both clubs have been made aware of, while Kick It Out has confirmed they have offered their support to both clubs.

William: Only Leicester can stop Liverpool now. The race isn't over yet. (Despite what pundits tell you.)

Atif: United have won against City, Chelsea, Leicester, Tottenham and drew against Arsenal and Liverpool, we should only play against the so called big clubs.

  14. Rate the players

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

Who stood out and who had a stinker? You can rate the players for both teams here.

  15. 'We could have had more goals'

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford: "We could have had more goals and really seen the game out. It is a tough win and sometimes they do more for you as a team and will Help us going forward.

"That first 30 minutes was terrific and what we played to do, the challenge is if we can do that for 80 or 90 minutes.

On unsavoury scenes where there was alleged racist abuse and objects thrown towards United midfielder Fred: "I wasn't aware of it during the game but it can happen and we've seen it happen lately. The fact it is still happening is not good enough."

On celebrating with the away fans at the end: "It's class, nothing gets better than that feeling. You can't top that. Happy for fans but challenge is keep that consistency."

Bob: United play great when hitting teams on the break. Problem is they can't do that when playing at home and against lesser teams.

Rob: Note that the difference between United and City over this season is the number of draws. Both have lost 4 games.

  17. Top of the tree

Here's how it looks at the top of the table. I bet there will be a few celebratory drinks had in Liverpool tonight...

    James: You're welcome Liverpool.

Mike: City can kiss good bye the title. Even if there's an unlikely collapse by Liverpool, I just can't see City going on the type of run they would need to overhaul them.
