This performance was a lot better than against Scotland. It was about finding way of getting a result and breaking down a stubborn Argentina side and they've found a way to do that today.

They dominated the play, they were patient, it was about picking out the right pass at the right time.

England striker Jodie Taylor: "It is a good performance today by the team and good win. I remember Beth Mead playing a perfect ball which landed right on my foot. I was in the right place at the right time.

"Patience was the key, we said it all week. We have had experienced facing a block of defence through qualifying and got frustrated, but today we had the quality and it paid off.

"I went to the corner and saw Jordan Nobbs on punditry and I gave her a wave as well as some family. It was a special goal for them."

In summary, that 1-0 victory for England means they are now two points clear at the top of Group D and are through to the last 16.

Nikita Parris' penalty, which was saved in the first half, didn't prove costly despite Argentine keeper Vanina Correa making a number of smart saves.

England striker Jodie Taylor poked in the winner at the back post in the 61st minute, following an excellent cross from Beth Mead. The Lionesses had chances to extend their lead but Jill Scott and Nikita Parris were denied again by Correa.

If England win the group, they take on the best third-placed side from either Group B, E or F (currently China, Cameroon or Chile).

A quarter-final in Le Havre would be next in store against the winner of a tussle between the runners-up of Group A and Group C (currently Norway and Australia).

If the Lionesses finish runners-up in the group, they take on the winner of Group E which is likely to be Canada or the Netherlands in Rennes.

A quarter-final in Valenciennes would follow against either the winner of Group C (Brazil, Italy or Australia) or the best third place team from Groups A (Norway/Nigeria), B (Spain/China) or F (likely Chile).

England captain Steph Houghton to BBC Radio 5 Live: "This was the objective when we came here. We knew it would be a tough game against Scotland. The first game was about winning and this is the same.

"They were resolute and hard working. We knew it would be difficult and hard to break them down. The keeper had a worldie.

"When we came in at half-time, it was all about sticking to the gameplan and we did that. We had a bit more rhythm today, a lot more of the ball.. We knew we could get better.

"Jodie is a world-class striker, she had a great Euros. When you get her in those areas, you know she’ll put them away."

England weren't at their fluent best, but part of that is because they came up against a very well-drilled Argentina side so perhaps you cannot be too critical. They dug it out, and got the win. Beth Mead and Alex Greenwood impressed on the left side, and Mead helped create both the penalty and the winner.

This is the first time England have won their first two group games at the Women's World Cup.

Jodie Taylor has also now scored six goals in her last five major tournament appearances for England.

"It should have been more but I stood in the warm up and saw their goalkeeper and she was unbelievable even in the warm up - if you're like that before the game you're not always like that in the game but she was outstanding - what you've seen tonight is an unbelievable goalkeeping performance.

"We want to beat Japan, they were outstanding against Scotland today.

"We'll go to Nice now and get some sun on our backs. Our players and enjoying it, we're having the time of our lives."

British tennis number one and French Open semi-finalist Johanna Konta is happy!

England boss Phil Neville to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We're really happy. I thought we played with confidence and composure like they have done for the past two days in training. Winning is a by-product of what you do during the week.

"Japan struggled to create chances against Argentina but we didn't. There is a lot of criticism about goalkeepers in the women's game but the keepers today were excellent.

"You always have a bit of a dip [after missing a penalty]. We composed ourselves after that. The main message before the game was don't get frustrated. We knew it would be an attack v defence game. Because it’s a World Cup you think 'don't get frustrated and keep passing the ball'. The most important thing is they're having the time of their lives and so am I.

"It was brilliant from Jodie [Taylor]. Brilliant from Ellen [White] the other day. If I could pick anyone to score it would be my forwards. When you have a happy centre-forward you have a happy house. We have a real competition for places."

It will be interesting to see whether Phil Neville rests any of England's key players for the final group game with Japan.

The winner of that match will top the group so there's still plenty to play for.

Midfielder Jade Moore, who picked up a yellow card in this game, will get a match suspension if she picks up another one before the quarter-finals.

Jodie Taylor tells BBC Sport she ran over to the corner to celebrate as her family were up there and she wanted to enjoy the moment with Jordan Nobbs, who had to miss the World Cup with a knee injury.
