    Spain 1-2 USA

    Hope Solo

Former US goalkeeper and World Cup winner on BBC Two

It's concerning that USA didn't score from open play, with the attacking prowess that they have.

I'm also surprised that Alex Morgan picked up the ball for that second penalty then didn't take it. You've got to wonder why.

Peter Shields: No team can play to their full potential for a whole tournament. Even the greatest teams have an "off day" The fact that USA have had a below par performance, yet still won, should be a warning to those still involved, not a false boost to their hopes.

Stu: And we all thought that the USA were easily going to win the World Cup.

  3. Post update

    Spain 1-2 USA

    Tom Garry

    BBC Sport in Reims

More boos from the Spain fans greet the final whistle, as VAR frustration lingers.

But there's lots of respect shown between the players on the pitch as they all - looking exhausted after playing in this relentless heat in Reims - shake hands.

The USA squad are now patting each other's backs, relieved. This was a tense one, but it's still a massive win for them.

  4. Post update

Neither goalkeeper made a save in that game. USA scored both their shots on target and Spain scored their only one.

John Mulligan: Respect to Hope Solo for her comments regarding the second USA penalty. Especially with the decision going the way of your home country. Called it as she saw it. Fair play. Gutted for Spain.

  6. Post update

    Spain 1-2 USA

    Laura Bassett

Former England defender on BBC Two

Spain were in the game from the first minute to the last. We'll see more from them in the tournaments ahead.

  7. Post update

It's France v United States on Friday in Paris. The standout quarter-final.

  8. Post update

    Spain 1-2 USA

    Hope Solo

Former US goalkeeper and World Cup winner on BBC Two

    On France in the quarter-finals...

France attack in numbers so, again, it's going to be quite the challenge for the United States' back-line and goalkeeper.

  9. Post update

James Long: Why can’t football do what other sports do on stoppages and just stop the clock? Other sports manage it. Would simpler and fairer than having excessive injury time.

  12. Post update

    Spain 1-2 USA

    Hope Solo

Former US goalkeeper and World Cup winner on BBC Two

    On USA's second penalty...

I didn't see enough to make that call. It's not convincing to me.

  14. Post update

    Spain 1-2 USA

    Tom Garry

    BBC Sport in Reims

We'd already seen hosts France come under some pressure at times during this tournament. Now this evening we've seen that the holders aren't invincible either.

They remain the favourites but tonight's effort from Spain has shown that this competition is wide open.

Lots of other teams will have taken hope from the way Spain have given the USA a scare here. They are human.

  15. FULL-TIME

    Spain 1-2 USA

It's all over. The United States are into the Women's World Cup quarter-finals, where they will play hosts France in Paris.

  18. Post update

    Spain 1-2 USA

The ball lands for Irene Paredes on the edge of the box... but she's nudged off the ball before she can shoot. Almost the moment.

  19. SUBSTITUTION

Final change (unless we go to extra time). Christen Press is on for Megan Rapinoe, who gets a standing ovation.
