  3. Hadron Collider music at Womad

    Hadron Super Collider

Womad festival has got itself some out of this world music this weekend.

It comes from the Cern Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator, which you may remember was built to help uncover the building blocks of the universe.

Well, while they really should have been working, scientists have also found they could convert the peaks and troughs of particle research from the Collider into musical notes.

Jamming with the Universe will take place at the festival in Wiltshire on Friday and will see scientists from Anglia Ruskin University joined by jazz pianist Al Blatter.

Dr Genevieve Williams, of Anglia Ruskin University said the music is "both melodic and fascinating".

Quote Message: The audience can close their eyes and experience science with their ears. Through a process called sonification, we are able to make music from scientific data and experience that data in new and beautiful ways. The music can also help us to explore and further our understanding of that data. This works because structure and regularity is fundamental to the natural world, but variability plays its part too.

It's not their first festival though - they also played last year at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

"It sounds beautiful but it sounds a little classical."

Conductor Andre de Ridder is putting the Stargaze orchestra through their paces, as they rehearse Fame for tomorrow night's David Bowie Prom.

The 11 musicians leaf back through their score and start again - the song's familiar funk riff replicated on flute and clarinet. "Always stay on the groove," de Ridder demands, before asking the brass to add "a little bit of growly stuff".

Sitting in the middle of the semi-circle at the BBC's Maida Vale studios is Laura Mvula, the mic stand clasped between her legs as she awaits her cue. As the song builds, she grabs the microphone and leans into the groove. "Is it any wonder, I reject you first?" she growls, her head bobbing to the beat.

Over the next 15 minutes, the song slowly comes into focus... Tomorrow they take it to the Royal Albert Hall.
