  8. Wentworth and Dearne MP's 'dismay' at HS2 plans

    Gina Bolton

    BBC Radio Sheffield

John Healey has expressed ‘dismay’ to the new Transport Secretary over abandoned plans for a station at Meadowhall in favour of a spur line to Sheffield.

    High speed train

In a letter to the Secretary of State, Mr Healey called on Chris Grayling "to commission HS2 to undertake a study of the feasibility and benefits of a mainline South Yorkshire station, on the HS2 route rather than on a ‘loop’ of standard rail track in central Sheffield."

He added that he had sought support from HS2 Chair Sir David Higgins for the study but would require the green light from the Transport Secretary before it could go ahead.

    Newly proposed route

HS2 recently announced its intention to shelve plans for a station at Meadowhall, which it said would save £1bn, and instead add a spur line which would run on the existing track into Sheffield Station.

In a separate letter to Sir David Higgins, Mr Healey urged the HS2 Chair to work with Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster councils to address concerns over the proposed route.

  14. Labour leadership hopeful chooses Orgreave for keynote speech

    Jenny Cork

    BBC Sheffield news

Labour leadership contender Owen Smith chose Orgreave to make a key policy speech this morning.

    Owen Speech in Orgreave

Orgreave is part of Rotherham MP Sarah Champion's constituency. She's now promised to work with Jeremy Corbyn having recently "un-resigned" from his shadow cabinet.

Despite this, there were a number of reasons behind the Labour leadership contender's choice to speak from the site of the former coking plant in South Yorkshire.

He began the speech by calling for a full "Hillsborough-style inquiry" into events at Orgreave during the miners' strike on 18 June 1984.

    Orgreave

Should he become the leader of the party and the next prime minister, Mr Smith promised to address the North/South divide by outlining a strategy for the North:

    • £50bn raised from long-dated government gilts to be invested in Trans-Pennine transport and developing business in the region’s cities and towns
    • He also gave a commitment to bring forward High Speed 3
Image of what High Speed train might look like

Mr Smith also proposed the scrapping of the Department for Work and Pensions

    • Introducing instead, a new Minister for Labour, with a ministry based in a Northern city such as Sheffield. He said the new ministry would look at delivering fair employment with tax incentives for businesses to relocate to the regions.

Owen Smith was confronted by a former miner after his speech earlier at the site of an important moment in the history of the miners’ strike, Orgreave in South Yorkshire.

In his speech, Mr Smith said he backed a public inquiry into the treatment of striking miners there by South Yorkshire police in 1984.

John Dunn, a former striking miner from Derbyshire and a Labour member who supports Jeremy Corbyn, said the challenger was exploiting the location, adding: “If we had to depend on Owen Smith for justice then we might as well pack up now."

  16. Barnsley Council staff to face random drink and drugs tests

    Jenny Cork

    BBC Sheffield news

Workers at Barnsley council will face drink and drug tests in the future. Councillors have backed a scheme which means any council employee could be randomly selected for testing.

Specific testing would also be carried out if a worker's manager had raised concerns about them.

The council says it's committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment and that includes ensuring employees are fit to carry out their duties.

Between 19:30 and 21:00 on Wednesday 20 July thieves are reported to have forced entry to the site of Catlow Civil Engineering in Pastures Road by breaking the gate locks.

The suspects reported to have stolen two bobcat miniature diggers using a white van to transport the machinery off the premises.
