  2. Evidence of historic tropical storms found at M4/M5 junction

    Today it is one of our busiest motorway junctions but 200 million years ago the Almondsbury Interchange was underwater.

    University of Worcester student Tiffany Slater has looked at a number of samples that were dug up 25 years ago when motorway signs were being built there.

    Some of the fossils found include gills from an early type of basking shark, Pseudocetorhinus pickfordi.

    Tiffany has studied more than 2,600 fossils which were dug up at the site, her work shows there were several major flooding events in the area.

    Food for thought next time you're heading over the concrete mass of roads and junctions.

  3. West business chief says Chinese could back off from Hinkley C

    Earlier we reported how the Chinese ambassador to Britain has warned that if the Hinkley C deal falls through it could seriously damage relations between the UK and China.

    China is expected to bankroll about a third of the new station but our government said it won't make a decision until the autumn.

    Meanwhile the Chief Executive of the West of England China Bureau - which works to forge links between the region and China - says the delay could derail the whole project.

    Dianne Francombe says the Chinese government could back off by the time the government make their decision.

  4. The romantic novelist tackling the football world

    Jilly Cooper is rather fond of the team at Forest Green Rovers, in fact she's decided to base her latest book on the club. 

    The Gloucestershire author is well known for her raunchy books, her latest one called Tackle features hunky footballers and their wives and girlfriends. 

    Jilly told Points West that the players at Forest Green are all "stunning looking...and fit".

  5. Rio 2016: Norton helps Team GB rugby sevens to fine start

    Way to make an entrance Team GB! The men's rugby sevens team have got off to a terrific start in Rio.

    Gloucester's Dan Norton crossed for the opening try and Team GB thrashed Kenya 31-7 in the opening match in Pool C.

    Tougher opponents will await as the competition goes on...

  6. Watch: Wiltshire windmill loses its sails

    The 40-year-old sails of Wilton Windmill, near Marlborough, are being taken down for repair. 

    It requires a team of people and some heavy duty machinery. They're expected to be back up and running again in a couple of months.

  7. Rio 2016: Bath's Willis wins heat in the pool

    Bath-based swimmer Andrew Willis has won his heat in the men's 200m breaststroke by 0.06 of a second.

    He held back, making Team GB fans a little nervous, but found some speed in the closing stages to edge ahead of the field and qualify for the semi-finals.

  8. Watch: Carpet company's £1.5m loom

    A Wiltshire-based carpet company has invested in a new high speed loom they say is helping them to create more jobs. 

    Wilton Carpets have been weaving for more than 350 years and are currently producing a carpet for the House of Commons.

    They are the first carpet manufacturers in the UK to use the new technology which they say makes their job quicker and cheaper, as well as improving the quality of their products too.

  9. Ed Ling: Winning Olympic bronze is absolutely amazing

    Taunton farmer Ed Ling has been speaking to BBC Somerset's Matt Faulkner after winning Britain's third medal of the Rio Olympics.

    He won a bronze medal in the trap shooting, hitting 13 out of 14 targets. He may be celebrating now but he says his day job means he has to return home tomorrow.

  10. Bristol Labour Party website owner posts Corbyn attack

    Bristol Labour Party's website has been replaced by an attack on Jeremy Corbyn and some of his supporters.

    A spokesman for Bristol Labour said the man who owns the website domain name is responsible for the change.

    It comes less than 24 hours after the Labour leader spoke at a leadership campaign rally in the city. 

    The website has been replaced with a page entitled "What happened to The Labour Bristol website?" which also criticises Momentum, a group backing Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader.

  11. Police appeal after ATM attack in Marlborough

    A cash machine in Marlborough has been damaged by fire in an attempted break in.

    Wiltshire Police say they received a call from the fire service at 3.23am this morning. No cash was taken.

  12. Chris Wood charity donation: I thought I need to do as much as I can

    Bristol golfer Chris Wood has been speaking about why he chose Children's Hospice South West to give his first major donation of £75,000. 

    The charity offers end-of-life care to children and respite for their families, but it costs £3m a year to run. Its logo already features on Chris' golf bag.

    Chris admits it's the first time he's been in a position to make such a donation and said there was only one place he wanted it to go.

  13. Dolphin stranded on beach at Burnham-on-Sea

    A team of rescuers had to come to the aid of a stranded dolphin in Burnham-on-Sea today.

    Lifeguards Scott Temple and Luke Penman were alerted to the fact the dolphin had beached itself and tried to get it swimming again.

    The dolphin was checked over by mammal experts from Burnham Area Rescue Boat before Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team and members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue helped to get it to swim on its own.

    "After giving it some assistance it took to the water and managed to get a good distance, all teams kept a watchful eye on it until it disappeared and we all hope that it is on the mend to full health," Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team said on its Facebook page.

    "If it does beach again please do not approach it but dial 999 and ask for the coastguard immediately so all proper assets can be tasked."

  14. Tributes paid to man who died putting his head out of train window

    A Bristol-based engineering technician with Hitachi Rail died after putting his head out of a train carriage window.

    Tributes have been paid to Simon Brown, 24, from East Grinstead in West Sussex, who was fatally injured as he was travelling on the Gatwick Express in London on Sunday.

    Friend Reuben Smith said: "Railways were his life."

    He was treated by ambulance crews but died at the scene.

    British Transport Police believe Mr Brown may have been leaning out of a train door window when he suffered a blow to the head at around 17.30pm on Sunday.

    His death has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.

    Points West have been experimenting with one of their newest toys, a 360-degree camera. It lets you see what the studio looks like from behind the lens too.

  16. Former Yeovil pub being transformed into homes

    A derelict pub in Yeovil is being turned into social housing.

    Somerset Care and Repair has bought the Milford Inn. The organisation works with councils to renovate abandoned properties before leasing them to people on the housing waiting list. 

    They've renovated more than 40 sites across the county over the past two years.

  17. Holiday food clubs to help families through the holidays

    The summer holidays are an expensive - and some would say exhausting - time of year. 

    For many families feeding and entertaining children who'd normally be in school can be a struggle. 

    To try and help various charities and community groups in Stroud have joined together to put on weekly food and fun days at a school. Laura Jones has been along to one.

  18. Salisbury stabbing: Man remanded

    A Salisbury man's been remanded in custody after a teenager was stabbed in the city on Sunday.

    Duncan Chaney, 36, has been charged with robbery and wounding with intent. 

    A 16-year-old boy is being treated in hospital for head injuries after the attack on Downton Road. He's in a serious but stable condition.

    Three other men and a woman who were arrested yesterday have been released on bail. A 51-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and wounding with intent and has also been released on bail.

  19. Dressage with a difference

    This is camel dressage... 

    You won't see it at the Rio Olympics but it does go on in Wiltshire, at Wilton House's Wessex Country Fair.
