  1. Gloucester's Dan Norton in rugby sevens quarter-final action

    Britain's men are just getting started in their quarter-final match against Argentina in the Olympic rugby sevens.

    Gloucester's Dan Norton scored the third try in their 21-9 victory over New Zealand which sent them there.

  2. Mid-August roadworks warning for West country drivers

    Two sets of roadworks are set to delay journeys in Gloucester and Bristol from next weekend.

    Work on the year-long project to upgrade the Elmbridge Court roundabout on Gloucester's ring road will begin on Monday 22 August, with the first six weeks described as "the worst for congestion".

    Meanwhile a section of St Augustine’s Parade in Bristol city centre will be reduced to three lanes for two weeks from Sunday 21 August, while work on the MetroBus project continues.

  3. Family hopes lessons have been learned after son's death

    The family of a man who killed himself two days after a telephone assessment by a mental health nurse have welcomed a coroner’s call for improvements to the way patients are assessed.

    Oliver Ford, from Weston-super-Mare, was found dead last August. His mother Sarah Ford had referred him to Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. 

    Coroner Maria Voisin told the inquest she will be calling on Oliver’s care to be re-examined to ensure future deaths are prevented. 

    Speaking after the inquest a family statement said they hoped "lessons have been learned...so that no other family has to live with the pain of losing a loved one in these circumstances".

  4. Warning to contractors after Yeovil gas leak

    Yeovil gas pipe leak

    Wales and West Utilities is warning contractors to double check before starting any digging in the road.

    It comes after a gas pipe was damaged near Yeovil Town Football Club last week, causing several hours of disruption for people living nearby.

    Ten homes on the Abbey Manor estate had to be evacuated and engineers had to work through the night to replace the pipe.

  5. The new Bristol development bucking the 'clone high street' trend

    Shops in the Wapping Wharf area have been filled entirely with independent retailers from Bristol and Bath.

  7. Olympic mum: It was all worth it

    Siobhan Marie O'Connor maybe currently making headlines after winning Olympic silver in the 200m individual medley, but her mum admits she found it difficult to watch. 

    Lindsey O'Connor, from South Gloucestershire, spoke to the BBC after her daughter finished 0.3 seconds behind Hungarian world champion Katinka Hosszu, who set an Olympic record.

    Meanwhile the people responsible for spotting Siobhan Marie's early potential have also been celebrating.

    Michelle Ruminski met coaches at her former swimming club in Keynsham, where she started at the age of eight. 

  8. 'Fair play to them' - Kids Company client on staff working for free

    We told you earlier about former Kids Company staff who are now working for free since the charity folded.

    Nikki Bird, 24, was helped by the charity as a youngster.

    She says she cried when the charity disappeared but is glad that former workers are carrying on despite being out of pocket.

  9. Rio 2016: Claudia Fragapane 'pleased in total' at Olympic performance

    We're gutted that Claudia Fragapane and the GB Gymnastics women didn't win any team medals at the Olympics.

    They had to settle for fifth, with the USA taking gold.

    But the Bristol gymnast is remaining positive nonetheless.

  10. RUH confident it can improve waiting times

    Bosses at Bath's Royal United Hospital say they are confident they can meet the improvements on waiting times required by the Care Quality Commission.

    Inspectors criticised delays in Accident and Emergency but found overall standards of care to be outstanding. 

    Helen Blanchard, director of nursing, said the improvements were "within our gift" and achievable.

  11. Oliver Ford inquest: Coroner calls for better mental health assessments

    The Avon coroner Maria Voisin has called for improvements in the way vulnerable mental health patients are assessed, especially at weekends. 

    It follows the death of 25-year-old Oliver Ford, who was found dead two days after being assessed by a nurse over the phone. 

    An inquest heard that no formal risk assessment was carried out and as the call was made on a Friday, Oliver would not have been seen until Monday. 

    Mrs Voisin said she would be writing to Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust to ask them to review weekend cover.

    Earlier the inquest heard that Oliver was found hanging in woodland near Clevedon last August.  

  12. Hay bales turn pink to raise awareness of breast cancer

    They might look like giant marshmallows - but what you're seeing as you drive past fields in some parts of the West country are actually pink hay bales.

    BBC Gloucestershire's Hayley Mortimer went to a farm near Wotton-under-Edge to find out more.

  13. Bath's RUH 'needs to improve waiting times'

    A Care Quality Commission inspection has found Bath's Royal United Hospital needs improve its waiting times.

    The health watchdog criticised delays in Accident and Emergency which impact on other parts of the hospital.

    Overall standards of care were found to be outstanding and the report praised a strong safety record.

  14. Siobhan Marie O'Connor: I just couldn't believe my time

    Take a look at this interview with Siobhan O'Connor who's won a silver medal in Rio.

    She's from South Gloucestershire and started her swimming career aged eight at Keysham Swimming Club.

    Early this morning the 20-year-old finished just 0.3 seconds behind Hungarian world champion Katinka Hosszu, who set an Olympic record, in the 200m individual medley.

  15. Perseid meteor shower in the skies tonight

    This photo was taken over Ashton Windmill in Somerset ahead of the meteor shower which is due to reach its peak between Thursday and Saturday.

    It's a composite image made from 728 photographs taken over three hours by Ben Birchall.

  16. Former Kids Company staff now working for free, BBC finds

    Staff from the now defunct charity Kids Company have been working for free to help vulnerable youngsters - a year after its closure, the BBC has found.

    Kidsco was set up in London by Camilla Batmanghelidjh and folded in 2015 amid concerns about financial mismanagement.

    The charity raised £42m in its nine years with an estimated £2m spent in Bristol helping hundreds of children and young adults in the city.

    Jane Ivall is one of eight therapists who used to be paid by Kidsco and is helping vulnerable youngsters but says it has been hard without money.
