  7. The Simpsons to get hour long hip-hop special

    Entertainment Weekly

Taraji P Henson as Cookie Lyon in Empire

We all know Bart Simpson can (sort-of) rap - remember hit 1990 single Do the Bartman? - but now The Simpsons is getting an hour-long hip-hop themed special episode.

The cartoon's first ever hour-long instalment - entitled The Great Phatsby - will feature Empire actress Taraji P Henson, who plays Cookie Lyon in the hit US show.

The hip-hop-themed homage to classic F Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby will air in the US in the new year.

Exec producer Matt Selman told EW:

Quote Message: This was just going to be a regular episode, but the table read went so well, in a fit of passion and excitement and ambition and excess, we decided to supersize it. And we haven't done a huge amount of stories in the world of hip-hop and rap culture, so we just went for it.
    The Simpsons

The episode follows an unlikely friendship that blossoms and ultimately turns sour between megalomaniac power plant boss Mr Burns and a charismatic rap mogul named Jay G.

“Part 1 of the show I would subtitle as The Betrayal, and part 2 I would subtitle as The Revenge,” adds Selman.

“It’s kind of like a two-part rap album.”

M.I.A.'s revealed the former One Direction star is one of the featured artists on her forthcoming new album AIM, due out on 9 September.

She told EW on the phone from India that her friendship with Zayn began when she considered writing songs for his debut solo album, but she's now got him singing on a track called Freedun:

Quote Message: That’s the song we mastered yesterday. We’ve just been going back and forth on, you know, WhatsApp. We have the same publishers and they wanted me to demo some songs for Zayn. Before I started writing properly my own stuff [for AIM], I was thinking maybe I’ll write for other people instead. I really wanted to write a song for Zayn… We had a couple people in common, and that’s how it came about. I didn’t really approach him for my own record until later on. First, I thought I wanted to try writing a song for him.
  20. The Girl from Ipanema sees massive streaming boost

Gisele during Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony

Classic Brazillian track The Girl from Ipanema has seen a huge surge in popularity since taking centre stage during the Olympics opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on Friday - where it was played as supermodel Gisele took the stage.

Spotify says the song was streamed more than 40,000 times the next day - a 1,200% rise for the track, which was typically streamed about 3,000 times a day before the Olympics.

Written in 1964 by composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and poet Vinicius De Moraes, it became a huge hit and helped the craze for Bossa Nova sweep the world.

Helo Pinheiro inspired the song as a 17-year-old regular on the Rio beaches, and is now a 71-year-old (very glamorous) grandmother, who was one of the torch bearers carrying the Olympic flame.

    Helo Pinheiro

You can find out how the song changed Pinheiro's life on BBC documentary The Girl From Ipanema: Brazil, Bossa Nova And The Beach which is on the iPlayer now.
