  11. Swindon parish council decision - Dan explains

Like many councils, Swindon Borough is grappling with how to deal with government spending cuts. By 2020, it expects at least 80% of its budget to be sucked up by the costs of social care for vulnerable adults and children.

And like many councils, it is trying to get the smaller Parish Councils - which don't have any restrictions on the amount they raise taxes by - to help out by taking over services like grass cutting, street cleaning, grounds maintenance, community centres, and even some libraries.

But Swindon is taking that idea a step further - setting up four brand new parish councils in areas where none previous existed, explicitly for the purpose of running these services.

One would cover the distinct area of West Swindon, two would cover vast areas vaguely described as 'Central Swindon', and one would encompass the South including Old Town and Wichelstowe.

The opposition parties and many of the town's resident associations are angry about it for two main reasons. Firstly, it opens the door to potentially considerable tax rises. Secondly, the feeling that these new parishes are being imposed on people who've never asked for them without getting any real say.

But the message from the Conservative administration is clear: funding cuts mean the status quo isn't an option, so either we get parishes to cut the grass in future, or the grass simply won't get cut.

  12. Happy birthday to Swindon's wing walking octogenarian

    He's done it!

  13. Will Swindon get four new parish councils?

A cabinet decision's expected tonight over controversial plans to create four brand new parish councils around the central Swindon area.

The idea is that the new councils would take over services which could otherwise fall victim to government spending cuts.

BBC Wiltshire's political reporter Dan O'Brien is at tonight's Cabinet meeting (6pm) and you can follow his updates on Twitter (@DanOB1986).

  14. Somerset CCC reach semi-finals

    Tom Garry

    BBC Sport, West region

It is a big margin of victory for Somerset against a solid Worcestershire side - who won the cup in 2007 - and keeps alive the dream of a first one-day-format competition title for Somerset since 1979.

Sri Lankan star Mahela Jayawardene is Somerset's hero today, reaching a century from just 99 balls to set up a terrific win.
