  2. Bradford 'could benefit' from new grammar schools

    A leading Bradford politician has suggested the city could benefit from opening new grammar schools. 

    The leader of the Bradford Conservative party Simon Cooke says selective schools could help children from disadvantaged backgrounds in the city.

    His comments come after a newspaper report over the weekend suggested Prime Minister Theresa May was keen to lift the ban on opening new selective grammar schools.

  3. Weather: Showers this evening, drier in the morning

    Showers will continue on and off through this evening and overnight with some drier, clearer spells too. Cool again with temperatures slipping into single figures in some places.

  4. Leeds United: Fleetwood Town preview

    Former Leeds United manager Uwe Rosler has a fully-fit squad to face his former club in the EFL Cup.

    The Fleetwood Town head coach will play Leeds tomorrow.

    Leeds right-back Gaetano Berardi will miss the trip after limping out in the first half of Sunday's 3-0 loss to QPR.

    Former Swansea City winger Pablo Hernandez has received international clearance, after failing to get it before their opening Championship game.

    Our thanks to Paul Cresswell who, thanks to his insomnia, took the time to go out and take this great photo of the old Ferrybridge power station.

    Usually if I can't sleep, I watch old episodes of Bullseye on the telly. Paul's approach is far more productive.

  6. Batley woman charged under terrorism act

    A 56-year-old woman from Batley has been charged with a terrorism offence.  

    Mary Kaya appeared before Westminster Magistrates Court today accused of Disseminating Terrorist Publications contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

    She was arrested on 21 October last year as part of a pre-planned operation led by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit.

  7. Huddersfield Town: Wagner looks to break his duck

    David Wagner says he wants to break his duck by winning his first Cup game in charge of Huddersfield Town when they travel to Shrewsbury tonight in the League Cup.

    The Terriers' head coach is likely to make some changes for tonight's match, but wouldn't be drawn on how many.

    Sounds like a fire in South Elmsall is causing some travel issues. 

    We understand from the emergency services that it's some hay that's caught light. According to them it's now under control.

  11. Renovation reveals 'spectacular' glass roof at Leeds art Gallery

    You know when you find a fiver down the back of the sofa, well this is a bit like that, but on a much bigger scale.

    Leeds Art Gallery is currently undergoing a renovation, and workers have just uncovered this amazing glass roof, that's been hidden for more than 40 years.

    The building is currently having essential repairs carried out, and the glass roof on the 128-year-old building was rediscovered after a false ceiling in one of the upper galleries was removed.

    The gallery shut on 10 January and is expected to remain closed until October next year.

  12. Woman's body found in canal in Mirfield

    The body of a woman has been discovered in the canal in Mirfield this morning.

    Police were called to a stretch of the Calder and Hebble navigation behind the Lidl supermarket at around 09:00.

    Officers say that there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances. 

    West Yorkshire Police say that "A post mortem will be conducted to determine a cause of death, investigations remain ongoing."

  13. Virgin East Coast staff ballot: 84% vote for walk out

    More on the vote by Virgin East Coast rail workers to go out on strike in a dispute over job cuts, working conditions and safety.

    In the ballot, 84% backed walkouts, with nine out of 10 supporting other forms of industrial action. If the strike does go ahead, it will affect passengers travelling between London, Leeds and Wakefield.

    Virgin East Coast rail workers have voted to go out on strike in a dispute over job cuts, working conditions and safety, the RMT union has said.

  15. Rio Olympics 2016: Japan take gold in men's team final as GB narrowly miss bronze

    Great Britain's men's gymnastics team, which includes Pudsey's Nile Wilson, narrowly missed out on bronze as Japan won gold in the men's final.

    Wilson, along with Louis Smith, Max Whitlock, Kristian Thomas, and Brinn Bevan finished fourth with 269.725 points.

    Smith fell off the pommel in a complicated final rotation as China secured bronze with 271.122 points.
