  7. Murray's medal request rejected

    Yvonne Murray

Yvonne Murray's request for her 1988 Olympic bronze medal to be upgraded because of state-sponsored drug taking by Russian athletes has been rejected.

Russia's Tetyana Dorovskikh took the 3,000m gold medal but tested positive for drug use in 1993.

Murray's husband, Tom Mooney, wrote to the IOC last year.

"Their view is that they can't prove that Dorovskikh was on drugs when competing at Seoul in 88 when she tested positive in 93," he said.

  11. Mourinho wants one more 'crucial' signing

    Man Utd 1-4 Dortmund

    Jose Mourinho

Following his side's defeat by Borussia Dortmund, Jose Mourinho said playing in the Shanghai heat was not ideal preparation for his Manchester United players, and added that he is still looking for one more "crucial" signing.

"It would be much easier to have pre-season in North America or Europe. The decision to come here was based on the passion of the fans.

"We are completely convinced of our market. It has a fundamental part of four players. When we finish that fundamental market we are balanced.

"Then the market is open until 31 August. Sometimes things happen you are not expecting and you have to react. But the fundamental market is four players and we just need that crucial one."

  13. Schurrle puts 'ego aside'

    Man Utd 1-4 Dortmund

    Thomas Tuchel

Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel has been speaking after his side's pre-season success against Manchester United.

On the signing of Andre Schurrle he said: "We urgently needed a player up front. He has special qualities. He puts his ego aside."

On the breakdown of Neven Subotic's move to Middlesbrough: "I'm not disappointed that he comes back. It was his wish to play for Middlesbrough. He needs surgery. That is the last information I've got. He will get all our support."

And on the rumours linking Matthias Ginter with a move to the Premier League: "German clubs want to sign him. English clubs want to sign him. He is our player and he stays our player."

  15. 'Unfair to make decision on players'

    Man Utd 1-4 Dortmund

    United v Dortmund

More from Jose Mourinho following United's defeat in Shanghai: "I don't think I can analyse them with such difference in preparation. It was like F1 against F3. They are much sharper, so difficult to judge. But it is quite easy to get three, four, five - the quality and mentality and personality is there.

"(It's been) 10 days of work. People really tired. High quality opposition. Unfair to make any decision. Day by day they are starting to win my trust.

"The reality is even in this situation we have six players still in Europe, plus (Wayne) Rooney and (Chris) Smalling who are only training.

"That is eight not involved. Obviously some are not going to stay in the squad and it will be different than it is at the moment."

  16. England lay platform at Old Trafford

    Cricket

Alastair Cook hit a fine 105 and Joe Root 87 not out as England laid the platform for a sizeable total in the second Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford.

Captain Cook played on to Mohammad Amir on the stroke of tea, having moved level with Australia legend Donald Bradman on 29 Test centuries.

Cook added 185 for the second wicket with Root as England took tea on 210-2, Amir having bowled Alex Hales for 10 after England won the toss and chose to bat first on a true surface.

England trail 1-0 in the four-Test series following a 75-run defeat at Lord's that owed much to a disappointing performance with the bat.

  18. Allardyce is 'the ideal candidate'

    Football

FA chief executive Martin Glenn: “Sam Allardyce is the right man for the England job.

"His excellent managerial credentials, including his ability to realise the potential of players and teams, develop a strong team ethos and embrace modern methods that enhance performance, made him the outstanding choice.

"That was underlined when we sat down to talk and we could not help but be energised by his personal perspective on England’s future and how it complemented the extensive work that we are looking to build on at St George’s Park.

"Dan Ashworth, David Gill and I have carried out a thorough process in the last three weeks and ultimately we could not look beyond Sam as the ideal candidate.”

  19. 'Absolutely the best job in English football'

    Football

Former Limerick, Blackpool, Notts County, Bolton, Newcastle, Blackburn, West Ham and Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce said: “I am extremely honoured to be appointed England manager especially as it is no secret that this is the role I have always wanted.

"For me, it is absolutely the best job in English football. I will do everything I can to help England do well and give our nation the success our fans deserve. Above all, we have to make the people and the whole country proud.

“While my main focus will be on the senior team and getting positive results, I want to add my influence to the great work being done across the development teams at St George’s Park – a facility I have used with my previous clubs.

“I know we have talented, committed players and it is time for us to deliver.”

  20. 'Mandate to shape a strong, purposeful team identity'

    Football

The Football Association have also issued a statement on Sam Allardyce being named England boss.

"Allardyce arrives with a proven track record of getting the best results out of the teams he has managed and a strong reputation as a forward-thinker with progressive ideas.

"Alongside his primary target of qualification for the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia, Allardyce has a mandate to shape a strong, purposeful team identity and maximise the performance potential of a young, talented England squad at a major tournament.

"Allardyce is also charged with helping [technical director Dan] Ashworth integrate and strengthen the FA’s elite performance and coaching programme across the England senior and development teams at St. George’s Park."
