Overnight weather: Scattered showers perhaps locally heavy

Early showers will fade and there'll be breaks in the cloud tomorrow to give some good sunny spells. There will still be a risk of a few isolated but locally heavy showers developing during the afternoon and evening. Top temperature: 23C (73F) inland.
Charles Darwin's stuffed pigeons, the letter which first coined the term 'genetics', and a paper by Crick and Watson which helped decode DNA all feature in the latest film to celebrate Cambridge University Library's 600th anniversary.
The latest film travels from Darwin to DNA, demonstrating how Cambridge has been crucial to the history of how heredity is understood.
Colette McCulloch named as pedestrian struck by lorry on A1

Police have just confirmed that Colette McCulloch, 35, of The Lane, Wyboston, was killed after being struck by a lorry on the A1 yesterday.
The crash happened at about 03:00 on the southbound carriageway near Eaton Socon, on the Bedfordshire-Cambridgeshire border, causing the road to be completely shut for much of the morning.

Vintage van for veteran ice cream man

The Cambridge News reports Cherry Hinton-based ice cream man Giovanni Rozzo can now sell ices again... at the age of 103.
It's after his family bought him a vintage van, identical to the one he drove when he first started his ice cream business in the 1960s.
It may now be used for special events including weddings.

BBC presenter Prof Alice Roberts joined the team excavating the 3,000-year-old Bronze Age village at Must Farm, near Peterborough, that's been called the "British Pompeii".
It's a big happy birthday to St John's College, which is celebrating 500 years since it opened today.
To mark the anniversary, it is holding a special quincentenary service today for its present-day fellows, students and staff.
A public exhibition, which explores the changing life of St John’s over the last 500 years, is also open in the college library.

Cambridge memorial for Vietnam backpacker

A memorial day is set to take place in Cambridge on Sunday for backpacker Aiden Webb, who plunged to his death trying to climb Vietnam's highest mountain.
The 22-year-old former Anglia Ruskin University graduate set off to scale Fansipan mountain alone on 3 June. He died after slipping down a waterfall and was found six days later.

His family and girlfriend Bluebell Baughan have arranged the event on Jesus Green in Cambridge.
It will include personal tributes, "memory tables" and a candlelit vigil.
Organising the tribute has helped the family through their grief, his girlfriend said.

A big highlight already has to be The Georgia Shackleton Trio, who originate from just over the border in Norfolk. They were playing the festival for the first time and received a great reception.

Cambridge United fundraiser for injured footballers

Cambridge United has announced plans to host a fundraising day in aid of local footballers Shaun Whiter and Joey Abbs, who were both injured in a crash in Newmarket.
Newmarket Town's Shaun Whiter (below) lost his legs in the incident earlier this month, while Soham Town Rangers' Joey Abbs sustained "serious" leg injuries.

The club has invited Newmarket Town, Cambridge City, Soham Town Rangers and Fulbourn Institute to take part in a tournament on 9 October.
"We want to provide some practical help," Cambridge United's chief executive Jez George told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
'More than three quarters' of motorists speed in county's villages

A community group in Cambridgeshire says as many as three quarters of motorists are excessively speeding in some of the county's villages.

Cambridgeshire Community Roadwatch says it has seen cars go through hedges and fences, with some travelling as fast as 86mph in a residential zone.
David McCandless from the group said because it doesn't report anyone to police, it can be more "covert" and provide more reliable data.
More than 2,000 sign Minor Injury Unit petition

More than 2,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Minor Injury Unit in Ely to stay open.

Earlier this week a report by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group, seen by the BBC, recommended closing the unit in Ely as well as units in Doddington and Wisbech, because they don't give value for money.
The CCG said no decision has been made and it's just option they are looking at, but the MP for North East Cambridgeshire, Stephen Barclay, has said he's concerned about the future of the units.
