Pakistan's Sohail Khan on Sky Sports: "When I played my first two Test matches, the pitches were flat and it didn't swing for me. But no excuses - I worked hard and it paid off.

"Good areas are good areas wherever you are. My plan was to hit the right area - you can bowl against any batsman if you hit the right area."

There was some dashing strokeplay by Steven Finn, but he was left high and dry when Sohail pinned James Anderson leg before to complete his maiden Test five-fer. That was the last action of the day, England all out for 297.

Pakistan, though, worked their way through the lower order. First Chris Woakes, then, with the aid of the new ball, Stuart Broad and Moeen.

Moeen played lovely today. He played today a very sensible, careful innings. His fifty was worth a fortune to England. That’s enough. If England bowl well, catch their catches, it will be alright.

That left Moeen to complete his sixth Test half-century, often playing with a flourish.

Ballance on his dismissal, on TMS: "I'm a bit disappointed to get out like that. It was a good catch by the keeper. I'm pretty happy with how I played today. Yeah I could have gone across too much but a bit more bat and it could have gone for four."

Ballance shared 66 with Moeen Ali, a stand ended when the left-hander bizarrely tickled Yasir Shah down the leg side.

Gary Ballance on TMS: "It was tough the whole day. They were always in the game, it kept you honest. And at the end of the day I think it was a par score. If someone gets a hundred, and we get 350 that’s great.

"But if we bowl well, this could be a par score. With a bit of cloud cover, we bowl well and get a second-innings lead we will have a chance."

It was a very accomplished innings today from Ballance, very disciplined and very well earned. Nobody can be guaranteed a long run. You have to perform. There are lots of pluses for being talented and staying in the national side. But there’s no certainty. You’re as good as your last innings.

Gary Ballance was another member of England's middle-order in need of runs, the left-hander delivering his first half-century since the first Ashes Test last summer.

Look at Vince, he’s not convincing. He’s a natural player, but I don’t think he’s got a game plan. Has he got any other shots than the cover drive?

Once again, James Vince threatened to look the part, only to fall in familiar fashion for 39. And, when Jonny Bairstow became Sohail's fourth wicket, England were struggling at 158-5.  

Alastair Cook looked in good touch for his 45, but the skipper falling lbw to Rahat Ali for 45 felt like a big moment. From then on, Pakistan chipped away.

Whoever was the think tank to bring the right-arm fast bowler, did some real thinking on it, just as England had to do thinking after Lord’s. Pakistan are thinking better. I think it will be a real cat and mouse game.

Geoffrey wasn't alone in saying he would have batted. Plenty were thinking the same until Sohail Khan got to work on Alex Hales and Joe Root.

I said this morning in the first half hour that I’d have batted. The decision by Misbah was a calculated gamble. It was partly negative because he was wary of Anderson. Secondly, he saw something in the pitch that most of us didn’t. There’s a bit of pace, and a bit where the odd ball doesn’t come on. There’s a bit of swing, a bit of movement. There’s been encouragement more than anything. England all out less than 300, Misbah will be thinking he’s done alright.

Pakistan will think they've got to be batting tomorrow night. On a pitch like this if they bat badly, you can see a team being bowled out for 150.
