A rowing club from Dundrum in Northern Ireland has won the Skiffie World Championship, an international contest held at Strangford Lough, County Down.

They took the title ahead of more than 50 clubs, including teams from the USA, Tasmania, Netherlands, Scotland, Wales and throughout Ireland.

Skiffs are traditionally-styled, colourful rowing boats, crafted by the rowing teams to reflect their own area.

More than 1,000 competitors took part in the week-long championship.

The event, organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, began last Saturday in Delamont Country Park, Killyleagh.

It featured various heats throughout the week, with Dundrum going into Saturday's final on top of the leader board.

The climax of the competition coincided with the Strangford Lough Festival.

The regatta is due to arrive in Strangford later, with trophy presentations in Strangford Green from 19:00 BST.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council chairperson, Gillian Fitzpatrick, said: "This is a hugely significant event and the council are very proud to work with the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association and our neighbouring council in Ards and North Down as well as Strangford Lough and Lecale Partnership to bring this fantastic event to fruition."
