The third annual Afrikan Emancipation Day Reparations March took place from Brixton to Parliament Square calling for reparations to be made for slavery.
Organisers carried a petition to parliament demanding the government acknowledges the historic and ongoing impact of colonisation and slavery.
In a statement read during a pre-sentence hearing, Mr Zimmerman said he had been "left with a scar on my neck which I am aware of only because it pulls when I use my voice but is otherwise superficial and healing well.
"I am somewhat more cautious about interacting with strangers since the attack - overall I have not been significantly traumatised by the attack psychologically," he added.
He had a history of mental illness and psychosis, including the paranoid belief that he was being persecuted for his religion and stalked by MI5 and MI6.
Attempt to kill was 'for ideological reasons' - Judge
Judge Hilliard said Mire's "brazen" actions were carried out in order to advance a "religious and extremist cause".
"This was an attempt to kill an innocent member of the public for ideological reasons by cutting his throat in plain sight for maximum impact," he said.
Leytonstone attacker 'motivated by events in Syria' - Judge
He was found guilty of attempted murder, and admitted four counts of attempted wounding and an alternative count of wounding with intent to cause Mr Zimmerman grievous bodily harm.
Mire to start sentence at Broadmoor secure hospital
Mr Zimmerman said he was "lucky to survive" following the attack, in which Mire tried to behead him.

A Tottenham Hotspur fan who had his legs and hands amputated after contracting meningitis has played in his first proper football match.
8-year-old Marshall Janson, from Perranporth in Cornwall, is football crazy and his only wish was that he could play football like other boys his age - yesterday his dream came true.
Police said they were searching for witnesses to the attack, which took place around 23:00 in the Viking and Spikes Bridge Road area.
DCI Lawson said: "I also want to trace a car which was seen driving in the area immediately before the assault. The car, which may be a Vauxhall, is thought to have contained three or four males."
A 24-year-old man is being held at a north London police station after being arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder.

Flanked by several dock officers and wearing a blue tracksuit top, Mire stared ahead as he was sentenced to life with a minimum of eight years in prison.
The court had heard when he was detained following the attack, he told officers: "Why don't you finish me off? You know that's what we do."
Leytonstone victim 'quite lucky' to have survived
Mr Zimmerman said he was "fortunate" to have received prompt first aidtreatment at the scene from a passing junior doctor and was "quite lucky" to have survived.

Sentencing Mire at the Old Bailey, Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC, Recorder of London, said that while he accepted the 30-year-old was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the offence, he was also of the opinion he had been motivated by events in Syria.
He continued: "In other words, because Muslims were being bombed in Syria, he was going to attack civilians here.
"That was designed to intimidate a section of the public, and it was to advance an extreme cause."
'You ain't no Muslim, bruv'
During the attack on 5 December, one onlooker shouted at Mire: "You ain't no Muslim, bruv", after he declared he was going to "spill blood" for his "Syrian brothers".
He was found guilty of attempted murder, and admitted four counts of attempted wounding and an alternative count of wounding with intent to cause Mr Zimmerman grievous bodily harm.
Mire to start sentence at Broadmoor secure hospital
Mire will serve a minimum of eight and a half years before being considered for parole, and will start his sentence at Broadmoor secure hospital.
