Oil giant BP is to cut its sponsorship funding of some of London's leading cultural establishments by £2.5m.

It has pledged £7.5m over five years to the Royal Opera House, British Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Royal Shakespeare Company from 2018.

It had sponsored the first three, plus Tate Britain, for £10m in five-year deals running up to 2017.

A BP spokeswoman said due to "cutting costs and reducing staff numbers... we could not continue all of our sponsorships at the same level".

A quarter of a million extra tickets for the new two-part Harry Potter play are to go on sale.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been showing at the Palace Theatre since June, but officially opens on Saturday.

A further 300 tickets for each show in the play's current sold-out run - which is due to continue until December 2017 - will be released on 4 August.

It has won five-star reviews and been called "a game-changing production".

The way social services handled the case of murdered six-year-old Ellie Butler should be subject to an investigation, a Coroner has said. 

Ellie died at the hands of her father, Ben Butler, in 2013 - a year after she'd been returned to her parents' care. 

Selena Lynch, senior south London Coroner, said her "preliminary view" was there were issues that needed to be investigated. 

Butler has lodged an application to appeal against his conviction and sentence. 

He was jailed for life with a minimum term of 23 years. His partner, Jennie Gray, was jailed for 42 months for child cruelly and attempting to pervert the course of justice. 

At a hearing in Croydon to consider whether the inquest into Ellie's death should be resumed, Ms Lynch said it was "very unlikely" that it would reveal any more facts about events on the day she died. 

But, she said, sometimes an inquest or inquiry was required to look at "wider issues" that had not been explored during criminal proceedings.

Ellie was placed back in her parents' care in November 2012, under the supervision of independent social workers. 

She was murdered in October 2013. 

"The management of her {Ellie's} care by other agencies such as social and medical services...in my view do fall to be investigated as a result of Article 2 of the Human Rights Act obligations placed on the state," said Ms Lynch. 

Ms Lynch stressed this was her "preliminary view" and she would make a final decision after receiving submissions and reading the case papers. 

She indicated that any inquiry or inquest would have to wait until the outcome of Butler's appeal bid. 

Ellie's grandfather, Neal Gray, who was in court, has called for a public inquiry.

Mr Gray has criticised the decision of a family court judge, Dame Mary Hogg, to allow Ellie to be returned to her parents. 

Dame Mary, who's since retired, "exonerated" Butler of causing head injuries Ellie sustained as a baby. 

But Ms Lynch said the coroner could not review previous judicial decisions, judges' "thought processes" or findings, though the "framework" of the way decisions are reached could be examined, as well as the way courts interact with other agencies. 

After the hearing, Mr Gray said he remained "deeply concerned" about decisions made in the family proceedings which he said had led to Ellie being placed in a "dangerous situation" and which prevented agencies from acting on the "clear warning signs". 

"My aim is to get answers and to make sure that lessons are learned so that this cannot happen to another child."

Detectives are appealing for the public's help to trace missing 15-year-old Elena Veronica Ciochina, who is believed to be in Spain with an older man.

Elena was last seen on Saturday at about 19:00 when she left her home address in Newham.

Police believe she is with 27-year-old Ionut Gheorghe. He was also last seen on Saturday. He was caught on CCTV in Enfield withdrawing £250 from a cash point, at about 14:20.

It is thought they left the country some time on Saturday evening, and they are currently in the Guadalajara area of Spain, near to Madrid.

A European Arrest Warrant is now in place for Mr Gheorghe for abduction.

Elena is described as 1.75m tall, with waist-length black hair. She was wearing a black Tshirt, black jogging bottoms and black plimsolls. It is believed she is in possession of a Romanian identity card.

Mr Gheorghe is described as white, about 1.70m tall, of heavy build with short light brown hair. He was last seen wearing a white T-Shirt, dark shorts and dark coloured flip flops.

Two London prisons are among six highlighted as being of "serious concern" as official figures show assaults on prison officers in England and Wales have risen to a record level.

Wormwood Scrubs in Hammersmith and Isis prison in Thamesmead were named as being among the worst performing jails by the Ministry of Justice.

The government department said overall there were 5,423 assaults on prison staff in the 12 months to the end of March - a rise of 40% on last year.

Shares in London Dungeon and Madame Tussauds owner Merlin tumbled on Thursday as its boss admitted that swathes of international tourists are shunning the capital in the wake of terrorist attacks across Europe.  

Guards on Southern Rail are to stage a five-day strike from August 8 as part of the long-running dispute over the future of their roles, the RMT union said.

A teenage drug dealer has been found guilty of a "brutal murder".

Kaleb Amponsah, 18, of Robertson Road, east London, was convicted earlier at the Old Bailey of stabbing to death Ade Afariogun, 27, in January following an argument in a park.

He is due to be sentenced next month.

The court heard how Mr Afariogun had gone to Plaistow Park to meet some friends when Amponsah arrived.

Prosecutor Oliver Glasgow QC said Amponsah "had ridden to the park on a bicycle and he had gone there to sell drugs."

"Once there Kaleb Amponsah cycled past Ade Afariogun on several occasions and, for a reason that no one could understand, he stared angrily at him, as if trying to provoke a reaction."

As Mr Afariogun was leaving the park Amponsah had stopped his bike in front of him and a scuffle followed during which the two of them exchanged blows.

Amponsah then produced a large knife and stabbed Mr Afariogun in the stomach and turned and fled.

Mr Glasgow said Amponsah then returned home to change his clothes and later met up with a friend "casually returning to the business of selling drugs as if nothing had happened."

"There was nothing that Ade Afariogun said or did to cause the defendant to fear for his safety."

"The attack was exactly that, an attack, and there is nothing that this defendant can say that can excuse the brutal murder that he committed," Mr Glasgow said.

Mr Afariogun was rushed to hospital but died in the early hours of 1 February.

In a statement read to the court the victim's stepfather, Kay Oluwa, said how the incident had "devastated" the family.

Mr Oluwa said that Ade Afariogun was due to start a new job the week after the attack.

Judge Timothy Pontius told Amponsah he faced a lengthy term of imprisonment and remanded him in custody.

Detectives have issued CCTV of a man they want to speak to in connection with a burglary at Screwfix on Tooting High Street.

On Friday, 10 June police were called at around 20:35 to a report of where a laser hand tool worth £180 was taken.

CCTV from within the shop caught the moment the suspect walked into the shop and went behind the counter where he grabbed the tool and then left the store.

The suspect is described as a white male, in his late 40s of medium build, 5ft 10ins tall with receding short dark hair and a short dark goatee beard. He was wearing black trainers, black trousers and a grey and white hooded Adidas top. He was carrying a black bag over his right shoulder.
