  5. Two held on suspicion of attempted murder after shooting

    A further two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was shot in Manchester.

    A 27-year-old man was found by police with gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen at a takeaway on Rochdale Road, Harpurhey on 7 August.

    He underwent surgery and is now in a stable condition.  

    Two men, aged 21 and 26, both from Harpurhey were arrested earlier and remain in custody, Greater Manchester Police said.

    A further two men - a 27-year-old man from Longsight and a 22-year-old man from Harpurhey - were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Sunday and Thursday respectively.

    Both have been bailed pending further inquiries.

    Greater Manchester Police Federation pay tribute to three unarmed police officers who were shot dead on duty 50 years ago.

    They were killed after spotting an armed robbery near Wormwood Scrubs, in west London, on 12 August 1966.

  8. Arrest over Wigan attack

    A man has been arrested after a man was knocked unconscious in Wigan.

    A 28-year-old man was hit on the back of his head after being approached by a group of men in Wallgate after a night out on 30 July.

    He suffered serious head and facial injuries.

    A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and violent disorder. He has been released on bail until 11 November.

  9. Football: Man Utd winger Januzaj joins Sunderland on season-long loan deal

    Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj has joined fellow Premier League side Sunderland on a season-long loan.

    The move reunites the 21-year-old with former boss David Moyes, as well as ex team-mates Donald Love and Paddy McNair who joined for a combined £5.5m fee this week.

    Belgium international Januzaj had asked to leave Old Trafford on a permanent transfer but United preferred a loan.

  10. Ashton house blast: Family friends start fundraising

    Family and friends of those affected by the fire and explosion at a house in Ashton-under-Lyne are rallying around the victims.

    The Wilson family were forced to jump out of upstairs windows as the blaze raged - and John Wilson, 63, later died of his injuries in hospital. 

    A Just Giving crowd funding page has now been set up by friends of the family.

  15. Oldham GP surgery in special measures

    A GP surgery in Oldham has been placed in special measures after being rated inadequate by a health watchdog.

    The Care Quality Commission found some of the staff at Greenbank Surgery, including GP partners, did not know how to report incidents or concerns.

    Inspectors also found appropriate recruitment checks had not been undertaken before staff members started work at the surgery.

    NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group is yet to comment.

  17. From Warrington to the world: Food parcels project begins

    More than 600 volunteers in Warrington are making food parcels that include rice, soy and lentils to be sent to 70 of the poorest countries around the world.

  18. Building collapses in Oldham

    Fire crews have been dealing with a collapsed building in Oldham.

    The property on King Street is empty but surrounding buildings are being evacuated. 

    Crews got the call at about 11:30. 

  19. Man stabbed in neck in Levenshulme

    A man has been stabbed in the neck in Levenshulme.

    Levenshulme

    The man, in his 30s, was found injured at the junction of Matthews Lane and Lonsdale Road at about 06:00.

    He was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

    Police are appealing for witnesses.
