Natwest in Ashburton closed last year, and now Lloyds - the last bank in the town - has confirmed its branch is to close in November. Lloyds apologised, but said the number of customers was falling, and other facilities were available in the Post Office and nearby towns.

Local trader Francis Byng said it was a "really disgraceful" move. He said: "It's a decision, I'm sure, which has been taken way up the management chain. The people in the branch are facing the fury and dismay of all their customers. Banks which have served communities for years and years ought to take their responsibility more seriously."

  8. Ashburton Lloyds Bank branch closing 'because people use alternatives'

    Sophie Pierce

    BBC Radio Devon

Lloyds Bank has confirmed it is to close its Ashburton branch in November, leaving the town without any high street bank branches after the closure of Natwest last year.

    Lloyds Bank sign

Customers and traders have criticised the move. Lloyds apologised, but blamed falling customer numbers, saying the majority of people "now regularly use alternative branches or other ways to bank".

It added that its statistics showed:

    • The branch had "only 51 regular weekly personal and business customers"
    • Almost "70% of customers in Ashburton used other branches and other ways to bank such as online and telephone banking"
    • About 95% of personal customers "already use other branches, such as the Newton Abbot branch", where customers will have accounts transferred to

  12. Rio 216: 'Pool gate' water 'found to be safe'

    Aimee Lewis

    BBC Sport in Rio

Divers were forced to compete in water the colour sea lions - rather than Olympians - are accustomed to performing in as a diving pool turned green for the women's synchronised 10m platform final.

Questions were asked on social media. Had Shrek taken an overnight dip? Was it because Roald Dahl's BFG had been drinking frobscottle?

On Monday, Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow won bronze in then picture-perfect conditions, but the Plymouth-born diver was questioning what had happened to the clear water he had dived into just 24 hours earlier, tweeting: "Ermmm...what happened?!"

Organisers said: "It's very important to the Rio 2016 community to ensure a high quality of play. Tests were conducted and the water was found to be safe. We're investigating what the cause was."

However, despite reassurances, it's still being described on social media as "pool gate".
