  1. Five things we learnt today in North Yorkshire

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

Thanks for being with us today, we'll be back at 07:00 on Monday morning.

In the meantime, let's look back at five things we've discovered about North Yorkshire today.

    1. The Yorkshire MEP Timothy Kirkhope, honoured by David Cameron, says he thinks of himself as an 'old-fogey' rather than a crony
    2. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance made a special trip to Thirsk today to say thanks for a £50,000 donation and to meet 'Egg' Sheeran
    3. North Yorkshire Under-13s cricket champs have been showing the skills that won them a national trophy
    4. We learnt the difference, thanks to shepherds at the National Sheepdog Trials at Castle Howard, between "comebye" and "gidup"false
    5. And secrets were spilled about the moneymaking ways of North Yorkshire Olympic hopeful Jack Laugher - as a child he charged to show off his somersaults!

Let's head off to a hopefully sunny weekend with this BBC Weather Watcher pic taken by Juni.

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

The BBC Weather Watchers have been doing sterling work sending in summery seaside pics.

Here's a few of Filey and Scarborough. They make me think of "tall ships and stars to steer them by" (apologies to the poet John Masefield for butchering his work).

    Georgey Spanswick

    Presenter, BBC Radio York

The first Olympic Games to be held in South America officially gets under way tonight in Rio and someone who's jetting out there is Sam Greetham, the coach of Scarborough Swimming Club.

Sam has the rather important job of deciding whether the Olympic open-water swimming competition takes place.

He told me the water quality in Rio has been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons and says some swimmers are being told "not to put their faces in the water."

  6. How affordable is it to live in North Yorkshire: Check out the rental hotspots

    BBC News England

A BBC investigation has found people spend more than a third of their disposable income on rent across large parts of England.

Analysis shows the average rent of a one-bedroom property in almost half of all districts, boroughs and cities would cost more than 30% of the median take-home salary for the area.

    Rental signs

In Selby for example, the median annual gross salary is £27,378, leaving £1,815 a month after tax and National Insurance contributions. Experts recommend spending no more than 30% of this on housing, which would be £545.

An average studio flat in the area costs £316 a month and a one-bedroom property costs about £387 a month, while a two-bedroom home is about £523.
