  1. Five things we learned today

    Nick Wilmshurst

    BBC Local Live, Leeds

That's all from us for today, we'll be back tomorrow from 08:00 with more news, travel, weather and sport.

Before I ride off into the sunset, here are five things we didn't know when we woke up this morning...

    1. Live in Kirklees? Like to recycle? Maybe you need to think more carefully about what you stick in that green bin....
    2. It really stinks to live in Micklefield.
    3. If you've won gold at the Olympics, you can drink whatever you like. It's totally fine!
    4. Sadly, if it's not nailed down, it'll probably get nicked. That includes our pavements...
    5. What happens when a fire hydrant goes faulty? A huge fountain... that's what..!

    See you tomorrow.

  2. Countdown to Leeds Carnival

    Abi Jaiyeola

    Reporter, BBC Look North

It's almost time for the Leeds Carnival . On Bank Holiday Monday around 100,000 people are expected to turn out to watch the parade through Chapeltown and party in Potternewton Park.

    Carnival

It began in 1967 when a group of homesick Caribbean students decided to put on an event to remind them of their native islands. 49 years later it’s still going strong and its founder Arthur France is still at the helm.

Next year Carnival will celebrate 50 years and everyone I’ve spoken to this week is confident it’ll last another half century too!

Tonight on Look North I’ll take a look at the history of the event and through the week we’ll also look at the financial boost it brings to the city. Make sure you switch on your telly tonight on BBC One at 18:30!

  3. Do you know who this brooch belongs to?

West Yorkshire Police have recovered a brooch, and are struggling to find its rightful owner.

There is an identity tag with it with the name and address of Lavinia Brogden of Queensway, Rochdale.

falseOfficers have already been to the place mentioned on the tag, but didn't find the owners.

  4. One man's muck is another man's gold...

For most of us, this is a picture of a fairly boring looking road at night.

For others it's satisfying proof of a job well done!

  5. Leeds festival weather: Is it sun cream or wellies?

    Keeley Donovan

    BBC Look North

    Well the answer is... both!

At the moment, the best day looks like Friday, with plenty of sunshine kicking about...

    Leeds fest weather

But then it looks like being a wet start to Saturday followed by more showery spells for the rest of the weekend.

I'll keep you updated with the latest forecast as we get it!

Drivers are told to expect a busy A64, which will be shut to through traffic eastbound near Bramham Park from Thursday until 05:00 BST on Friday.

The bank holiday weekend event will see performances from bands including Biffy Clyro, Foals and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Festival traffic will exit the A1(M) at junction 44, then head west on the A64.

  7. Yorkshire's missing UKIP contenders

    Len Tingle

    Political Editor, BBC Look North

There was more than one puzzled face in the audience when the UK Independence Party campaign to replace Nigel Farage as leader arrived for its only event in Yorkshire.

    UKIP

The 90 or so members who turned up in Wakefield came armed with questions for all six contenders.

It took a long time before it dawned on them that they need not have bothered preparing anything to put to the bookie's favourite, East of England MEP Diane James, or the Lambeth-based NEC member Liz Jones.

    Neither of them turned up.

  8. Where's all this lovely weather coming from?

I'm sure you're not asking where all that lovely rain we had yesterday has gone, but here's why it's so warm today...

  9. Kirklees faces looming financial crisis

    Larry Budd

    Political reporter, BBC Radio Leeds

Leaders in Kirklees are facing a looming financial crisis over concerns the council has overspent by millions of pounds.

    Huddersfield town hall

The council needs to act quickly to tackle how much it's overspending by and can't keep dipping into reserves to cope according to council leader David Sheard.

A report shows they'll overspend by £6m this financial year, reserves could be at a critical level by next April and the council's facing a £38m financial black hole by 2020.

This report points to cuts in central Government grants and pressures created in Adult Social care caused by people living longer.

  10. In pictures: A sunny day in Leeds

The sunshine has returned to West Yorkshire!

And to illustrate it, here's some people enjoying the sun in the pop up park and the pop up beach in Millennium Square.

  11. Free advice for killing summer holiday boredom

Stuck for something to do with the kids over the summer hols?

You could do worse than heading up to Otley Chevin, the best thing is it's free and you get this view, as I did yesterday!

On a clear day you can see York Minster, but you can't in the pic I took as my camera's fairly rubbish...

  13. Woman hospitalised after jewellery robbery

A 61-year-old woman has had to undergo surgery after she was attacked by robbers who stole jewellery from her home

    Mount Pleasant Road

Last Friday afternoon, three men went into her house in Mount Pleasant Road, Pudsey through open patio doors and threatened her with a knife.

They punched and kicked the victim causing fractures to both sides of her jaw, a fractured wrist and cuts to her arms. They then dragged her upstairs and left with what is being described as a large amount of Asian gold jewellery.

She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary and underwent surgery to her jaw over the weekend before being discharged.

Quote Message: This was an appallingly violent attack on a woman in her own home by robbers who we believe were specifically targeting her for Asian gold jewellery. Her son found her in a terrible state after the incident and her family are understandably shocked at what has happened." from Det Insp Neil Thompson West Yorkshire Police

  14. Confiscated soil ploughed back into the community

You'll have heard of the Proceeds of Crime Act, where goods or money taken by the police from criminals is given back to the local community.

Well, here's a nice example of it in action. West Yorkshire Police confiscated 60 bags of soil that were seized from an illegal cannabis grower in Leeds.

    Soil

Those bags of soil are now in the hands of Beeston in Bloom and will be used on future gardening projects.

West Porkshire Police said "We are pleased that this was able to be donated and ploughed back into the community for a fantastic cause."

Extra points if you spotted the pun there...

  15. Mark and Daniel are set fair for Scarborough

    Jim Addyman

    BBC Local Live, Yorkshire

Today's the first day of the Scarborough Cricket Festival as Yorkshire take on Nottinghamshire in the County Championship.

But two avid Yorkshire cricket fans won't be arriving in Scarborough to watch the clash until tomorrow - despite having set off to see the match way back on Sunday.

That's because Mark Sugden and Daniel Hill are walking there all the way from Headingley.

Mark Sugden and Daniel Hill, from Leeds

Mark and Daniel are both keen players and also coach junior teams at Rodley Cricket Club in Leeds - and they're wearing their cricket whites for the 80-mile journey.

The pair are hoping to visit more than 18 clubs during the walk as they raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research in tribute to family and friends who've lost their lives to cancer or are currently undergoing treatment.

  16. What can and can't you recycle?

Just back to Kirklees and their recycling problems...

  17. Travel update: M1 southbound one lane closed J41

    BBC Travel

It's been nice and quiet on the roads so far today, but we've just had word that we've got a lane closed on the M1 southbound at J41 on the slip road. It's because of a broken down lorry.

Traffic's really light at the moment, so it's not causing too much disruption...
