  4. Politicians let down public in EU referendum campaign says Cumbrian MP and Lib Dem leader

Politicians "disastrously let down" people in the UK during the EU referendum campaign, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has said.

During a speech in Manchester to think tank IPPR, the MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale said that both sides of the debate "battered" voters who were "lied to" with "dodgy statistics".

He said that it had left the country bitterly divided as a result, with politicians abandoning voters to their fate.

The Cumbrian MP also stressed that he would continue to campaign to remain a member of the European Union, but added he knew Leave voters and understood why they wanted to vote that way.

  7. Time to pay top Cumbrian councillors more says independent panel

An independent panel has recommended a small increase in the amount of money that should be paid to some Cumbrian councillors.

Allowances for the Council Leader, currently Labour's Stuart Young, and other members of his top team, should be increased slightly according to Cumbria County Council's Independent Renumeration Panel.

Last year, increases were recommended but councillors chose to take a smaller pay rise.

The panel also recommended that the allowance that can be claimed towards hiring carers for family members while on council business should be increased to the National Living Wage (£7.20 per hour).

The plan would cost the council an extra £16,000 per year and will be considered by county councillors at a meeting next Wednesday.

  13. Cumbrian broadcaster and Labour peer blasts National Trust over farmland purchase

    BBC Radio Cumbria

Some more on the story we brought you yesterday - The broadcaster and peer Melvyn Bragg has accused the National Trust of ignoring the interests of Cumbrians living in Borrowdale after the charity bought acres of farmland, without the accompanying farmhouse.

The charity now owns around 300 acres, common rights and a flock of Herdwick sheep at Thorneythwaite Farm in the valley after it was offered for auction as a separate item to the farmhouse building.

Local farmers fear that it could hurt the area's farming system as Thorneythwaite will no longer be run by a farmer who lives and works on the land.

Speaking on BBC Radio Cumbria this morning, the Labour peer said that the charity should never have bought the land:
