  4. Bishop apologises after sex preacher is found guilty

    The Bishop of Truro, the Right Reverend Tim Thornton, apologised "unreservedly" to a man who was sexually abused as a child by former lay preacher Jeremy Dowling, 78.

    At Truro Crown Court Dowling was found guilty of indecently assaulting a 10-year-old boy he met through the church in the 1970s and jailed for eight years.

  5. Ukip defeat to Lib Dems in Cornwall by-election

    Ukip were defeated at the hands of the Lib Dems in a by-election in the Four Lanes division of Cornwall Council prompted by the resignation of a Ukip councillor.

    The Lib Dems had not contested the ward in the 2013 elections but pushed Ukip into last place with their win this time. Voting was: LD 300, Ind 144, C 128, Lab 125, Mebyon Kernow 111, Ukip 57.

  7. Marine accused of manufacturing explosives for terror offences

    A Royal Marine from Devon has been charged with terror offences including manufacturing explosives, making devices and storing them in barrels in hides in England and Northern Ireland.

    Ciaran Maxwell, aged 30, was arrested in Somerset last week after searches in Larne and Devon.

    He has been charged with one offence of terrorism, one of fraud and one of possessing cannabis. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court.

    The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have met a baby dinosaur as they surprised tourists when they visited the Eden Project today.

    Kate and William were greeted by the puppet after foggy weather forced them to delay their trip to the Isles of Scilly this morning.

    The couple clung to umbrellas as they battled the rain while surveying the enormous biomes in Cornwall.

  9. 'Invaluable' creche for parents with mental health issues to close

    An "invaluable" creche at a treatment centre in Exeter for parents with mental health problems is set to close.

    Budget cuts mean childcare could stop at Compass House, which is used by parents being treated for issues such as postnatal depression.

    Parent Talya Bagwell said: "It was invaluable. It meant that I could attend the appointments. If you take away that creche you are effectively denying access to those services for a number of women especially at a time when they are vulnerable."

    Ciaran Maxwell, 30, has been charged with one offence of terrorism, one of possession of cannabis and one of fraud.

    A former lay church preacher has been jailed for eight years after he was found guilty of indecently assaulting a 10-year-old boy he met through his church in the 1970s.

    Jeremy Dowling, aged 78, had denied six counts of indecent assault on a child and two counts of gross indecency with a child.

    Judge Simon Carr, at Truro Crown Court, said Dowling's victim "had attended the church for guidance and help and what he found was you".

    "You enjoyed the risk of being able to control someone to that extent," the judge said.

    The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have surprised tourists at Cornwall's Eden Project by making a last-minute trip to the popular attraction.

    William and Kate had planned to fly to the Isles of Scilly this morning but foggy conditions around Land's End forced them to delay their trip.

    The royal couple were given a guided tour as visitors wandered around the venue, famed for its hexagonal-panelled biomes filled with plants and trees from across the globe.

    Ciaran Maxwell, 30, from Exminster, Devon, was arrested on 24 August in Somerset by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Counter Terrorism Command  as part of an investigation into Northern Ireland-related terrorism.

    A former lay preacher has been found guilty of indecently assaulting a boy he met through his work with the church.

    Jeremy Dowling, 78, carried out the assaults on the 10-year-old boy who he met in 1973 at St Michaels Church at Budehaven.

    The victim, now in his fifties, says he went to the police after reading news reports last year that Dowling had been convicted of indecently assaulting boys at a private school where he worked as a teacher in the 1960s. 

    Dowling is already serving a seven year jail sentence for these offences. He had denied six counts of indecent assault on a child and two counts of gross indecency with a child.
