    We also reported that 12 men had appeared at Southend Magistrates' Court charged with violent disorder after an attack on Cambridge United supporter Simon Dobbin last year.

  3. Art project unveiled in Southend

    A new art installation along Alexandra Street in Southend, Essex, has been unveiled by Mayor Judith McMahon (pictured below), local artists and a group of local residents from Project 49.

    Project 49 commissioned an artist to work with a group of adults with learning disabilities to create colourful and dynamic artwork for display in the street.

    Pete Shrimplin, co-ordinator of community inclusion at Project 49 said: "The team deliberated a number of ideas, eventually settling on a street gallery theme with individual pieces being framed and displayed on the hoarding of a construction site just opposite Project 49’s Offices.

    "We contacted the builders and they kindly gave the project the green light.

    "The idea was to brighten up the street, improve community spirit and to show that people with learning difficulties can and do make valuable contributions within their community."

  4. BreakingArkadiusz Jozwik: Polish inquiry into Harlow death

    Polish state TV is reporting that the Warsaw District attorney's office has launched an investigation into the death of Polish citizen Arkadiusz Jozwik in Harlow last Saturday. 

    They say that, under Polish law, foreigners who commit a crime to the detriment of Polish citizens are liable before the Polish courts.

    It is independent of responsibility from the authorities of the country in which the crime has occurred. 

    They quote prosecutor James Romelczyk as saying that they will interview families of victims, and will also ask the UK authorities on the "circumstances of the event, to determine the perpetrators and bring them to criminal liability".

  5. Quinlan Pringle death: Family offered support from Foreign Office

    The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has sent a message of support for the family of the 13-year-old boy who died after being swept out in the water at the French port of Boulogne. 

    The body of Quinlan Pringle, from Colchester, was found by fishermen days after he got into difficulties on 15 August. Two other boys he had been with were rescued. 

    A statement said: "We are continuing to support the family of a British national who died at sea off Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. 

    "Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. We remain in close contact with the local authorities."

  6. Quinlan Pringle 'will continue to be loved within the form'

    Further tributes have been paid to the 13-year-old boy who died while away in Boulogne.

    Quinlan Pringle, from Colchester, got into difficulty while in the water in the French port on 15 August and was swept away by the current. His body was found a few days later.

    His form tutor from the Philip Morant School in Colchester said: "Quinlan was a quiet, sensitive and considerate boy with a delightfully playful, yet unobvious, sense of humour.  

    "He was, and will continue to be, loved within the form and we will miss him hugely while trying to treasure many wonderful memories at this very sad time."

  7. Man wanted over rape and false imprisonment

    A man is wanted by police in connection with a number of offences including rape, false imprisonment, wounding, possession of a firearm, threats to kill and theft.

    John Hewitt, 36, formerly of Dickson Road in Blackpool, also has links to Essex, Portsmouth, Wales, Norfolk, Thames Valley, Greater Manchester and London. 

    He is also known to go under the names of John Wilson, Dean McKenzie, John Burton and John Davies.

    Incidents are reported to have taken place between June 2015 and July this year.

  8. Quinlan Pringle was 'aspirational, hard-working and cheeky'

    Quinlan Pringle's school has been paying tribute to the 13-year-old, who died after he got into difficulty in the water while away in Boulogne, France.

    Quinlan, from Colchester, was swept away by the current while with two other boys on 15 August. The two other boys were rescued.

    The principal of the Philip Morant School in Colchester, Catherine Hutley, said: "Quinlan was an aspirational and hardworking young man, with a cheeky, endearing side to him which we all loved.

    "He will be sorely missed by the school community and our thoughts are with his family.

    "We are working closely with Essex County Council to ensure that students, their families and our staff have all the support they need at this devastating time."

  9. Search for Quinlan Pringle went on for several days at French port

    Thirteen-year-old boy Quinlan Pringle from Colchester was one of three boys who got into difficulty while away in Boulogne, France. 

    The incident happened on 15 August as he and the other boys were in the water at the entrance to the port.

    The other two boys were rescued, but Quinlan was swept away by the current.

    Officials said they searched for the teenager but his body was found on 21 August, by fishermen who were in the area.  

  10. BreakingSchool confirms pupil death of boy in France

    The Philip Morant School in Colchester has confirmed the death of one of its pupils while he was away in Boulogne, France.

    The school confirmed that Quinlan Pringle, who would have been going into year nine this academic year, died unexpectedly. 

  11. Simon Dobbin case: 12 men in court

    Earlier today 12 men appeared at Southend Magistrates' Court charged with violent disorder after an attack on Cambridge United supporter Simon Dobbin last year. 

    Those who pleaded not guilty to the charge were: 

    • Ryan Carter, 22, from Southend
    • Jamie Chambers, 23, from Southend 
    • Lewis Courtnell, 33, from Southend 
    • Philip McGill, 31, of Westcliff 
    • Michael Shawyer, 31, of Belgrave Road, Leigh-on-Sea
    • Greg Allen, 28, of Artillery Avenue, Shoeburyness
    • Matthew Petchey, 25, from Rochford    
    Philip McGill, Lewis Courtnell and Jamie Chambers
    •   Scott Nicholls, 40, from Langdon Hill, (pictured below), also denied the charge.

    Four others did not enter a plea. They were:

    • Alexander Woods, 20, of Westcliff 
    • James Woods, 20, of Westcliff

  12. Four arrested after robbery at Tiptree jeweller's

    Four people have been arrested after a robbery at a Cartouche jewellery store in Tiptree. 

    Two masked men stole jewellery said to amount a five-figure sum yesterday. 

    Two of those questioned have since been released on police bail, while the two others remain in custody.

  13. Cricket: Westley 'run out' on day three

    Essex batsman Tom Westley's career best knock has finally ended. 

    He was run out for 254 on day three of their County Championship match against Worcestershire at Chelmsford.

    It's only the tenth time in history that an Essex player has scored over 250 in an innings. 

    The home side declared on 601 for five, and have a huge lead of 371 runs after the first innings. 

     A win will keep Essex on course for promotion.
