  7. Carved door in Sheffield park offers portal to imaginary kingdom

    Kate Linderholm

    BBC Local Live, Sheffield

A beautifully carved door has appeared in the base of a tree near Forge Dam which has got the neighbours talking. Is it a portal to another world of hobbits, fairies or elves?

    Carved door

A tree inspection revealed the need for root protection works on an old horse chestnut tree in the woodland surrounding Forge Dam Park.

Local craftsman and ex-council ranger Henk Littlewood was commissioned to carry out the work to create the doorway to an imaginary world, which is carved with the words “Chestnut, plane and sycamore, who or what lies beyond the door?”

Quote Message: Sheffield has more trees than any other city in Britain and the council look after 2 million of them – that’s four for every person – in around 2,000 open spaces across the city. Here we have combined our duty of care for our woodland trees while weaving an important message to children about developing their imagination and creativity. I am really pleased with the result of the work.” from Cllr Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council

    Charlotte Leeming

Joanne Brownhill  of Campion Drive, Killamarsh, Sheffield and Mandy Sargent of Myrtle Crescent, Wickersley, Rotherham stole from people being cared for at Mansfield View which supports adults with learning difficulties.

There's a dispute over the amount stolen due to paperwork being destroyed - figures vary between prosecution and defence but South Yorkshire police put the figure at about £120,000.

Margaret MacCormac's nephew Paul was one of 24 the victims and she thinks the women should have got longer jail terms.

    David Crompton

An attempt to give bereaved families "parity of funding" with the police at future inquests was defeated in parliament last night.

Quote Message: The work that Bishop James is going to do is actually going to make a huge difference for cases going forward. Because of the experiences of what these people have gone through, so sadly over 27 years. So it's not just about Hillsborough and that's why we've decided to wait for all of the recommendations from Bishop James's review because that's going to affect people now and going forward in the future."

Smashed windows on Old Town Hall
