DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN COMPOSITION

– a one-day conference

Committing to greater diversity and inclusion within classical composition

Wednesday 19 October 2016, at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, UK

How can the classical music industry work better together to get more black, Asian and minority ethnic composers heard and celebrated?

In BBC Radio 3’s 70th anniversary year, alongside a celebration of our unique history, we’re focusing on future directions in classical music composition. In partnership with BASCA, the BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Northern College of Music, and in association with the BBC Black and Asian Forum, we’re hosting a one day pan-industry conference which aims to facilitate greater inclusion in classical music composition from composers and potential composers from the UK’s black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.

Classical music needs to be enriched by the widest possible range of artistic and cultural perspectives.

The conference will explore how the future development and excellence of classical music needs to be enriched by full engagement with the widest possible range of artistic and cultural perspectives.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN COMPOSITION is a pan-industry event which invites all involved in classical music-making; composers, publishers, festival directors, educators, venue managements, orchestral, chamber and operatic managements, funders, commissioners and industry bodies.

We’d particularly like music students and young people with an interest in composition to come along and help reshape the future of the UK’s classical music landscape. It will be a lively event as we come together to discuss how to increase opportunities for the next generation of composers. As black, Asian and minority ethnic composers are under-represented, we’ll give a special focus to how the industry can work better together to ensure inclusion and diversity of talent.

Guest speakers include: composers Daniel Kidane, Jeffrey Mumford, Priti Paintal, Shirley J. Thompson, Errollyn Wallen and Raymond Yiu, BASCA CEO Vick Bain, RNCM artistic director Michelle Castelletti, Toks Dada (programme co-ordinator, Town Hall and Symphony Hall, Birmingham), BBC Radio 3 Controller Alan Davey, Sound and Music CEO Susanna Eastburn, Chi-Chi Nwanoku (founder of the Chineke! Orchestra), BBC Head of Diversity and Inclusion Tunde Ogungbesan and others.

After the conference sessions end at 1615, members of the public will be able to attend Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’, presented by Suzy Klein, which will come live from the conference venue, the Royal Northern College of Music. Tickets will be available in September via the In Tune website.

Detailed delegate conference registration forms will be sent out after Friday 19 August. Please indicate your interest in receiving a delegate pack and registration form by following this link.
