  10. Ferry pay machine problems: Staff will help drivers, county says

Complaints about new self-service ticket machines for the car ferry across Windermere have led to a partial rethink by the county council that operates the service.

The machines on the approach road replaced staff who collected money while the ferry was crossing but critics say they're awkward to use and cause delays.

For the rest of the summer season, crew on the Windermere Ferry will help passengers use the onshore machines, which accept card payments as well as cash.

People who've been delayed can also now buy tickets for cash as they board the boat.

  11. Flood clean-up starts after roads and homes hit

Police say they've set up a group with other local authorities to co-ordinate a clean-up after flooding in south west Cumbria.

    Willow

The Iggesund paper mill at Workington and The Farmer's Network are hosting a series of farm visits to show the advantages of growing willow as a cash crop.

Terry Dixon from Braithwaite is already part of the scheme that supplies willow to power the Iggesund plant and planted 70 acres.

He said: "We've planted it on land that isn't really suitable for anything else and hopefully we can sit back and watch it grow.  It'll take three years before we get a harvest."

  13. New checks on A591 after floods

County highways engineers say they're "reviewing" whether more work is needed after flooding which affected parts of the A591 near Thirlmere at the weekend.

    A591

The affected road was part of a section closed for months for repairs after the floods of last winter swept part of it away and caused landslides blocking the route in several places.

In a statement the council said loose stone was washed down the slope above the road, blocking the culverts which run underneath, and teams had been sent to deal with the problem.

The country was closed off during the Soviet era, but it's now allowing people to visit never-before-climbed mountains.

Adrian says the excitement of a previously unclimbed peak is more rewarding than attempting bigger and better-known mountains.

He said: "You're standing on a summit that no one has stood on before, you've taken three, four maybe five days to get to that summit."
