  2. Millions watch The Tragically Hip's goodbye show

The Tragically Hip show is broadcast in Canada

A farewelll show from Canadian band The Tragically Hip reached 11.7 million people after CBC broadcast the gig on TV and live streamed it on the internet.

The band had announced the show in the group's hometown of Kingston, Ontario, after lead singer Gord Downie revealed he had terminal brain cancer.

The TV broadcast alone averaged four million viewers, according to preliminary audience figures, and it was streamed online on the broadcaster's website, apps, YouTube channel and Facebook page.

CBC said it was "an honour and a privilege" to broadcast the "unprecedented event".

"For nearly three hours on a summer Saturday night, an entire nation paused to celebrate and pay tribute together," said CBC's Heather Conway.

"Thank you to Gord, Paul, Rob, Gord and Johnny for an intimate and unforgettable shared experience."

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was at the live show, said the band had "been writing Canada's soundtrack for over 30 years".

  4. Barbra Streisand teaches Siri a lesson

    Barbra Streisand

Apple's virtual assistant Siri - and possibly quite a few real people's too - have been pronouncing Barbra Streisand's name all wrong, and now she's demanded the company put things right.

The US singer revealed during an interview with US radio station NPR's Weekend Edition that she'd been in touch to explain their mistake.

"I called the head of Apple, Tim Cook, and he delightfully agreed to have Siri change the pronunciation of my name, finally," she said.

Streisand said the second syllable of her name should be pronounced with "a soft S, like sand on the beach", and not "StreiZAND". So now we know.

The next Apple update is due on 30 September.

The city's mayor unveiled the plaque in front of several hundred fans, on the wall of what was Bowie's apartment.

As well as 1977's Heroes, Bowie created his albums Low (1977) and Lodger (1979)at the city's famous Hansa studios.

  8. Laura Marling explores women in the music industry

    Laura Marling

It's no secret that recording studios can be a very male environment, but Laura Marling is so curious about why, she's launched a new podcast project to tackle the subject.

Reversal of the Muse will see the British singer exploring the reasons so few women go into that side of the music industry and whether it makes any difference to the creative outcome.

LA sisters Haim and US studio engineer Vanessa Parr feature in the first two instalments which have gone live today, with weekly updates on the cards.

Laura explained what sparked the project:

Quote Message: Reversal Of The Muse began as conversations between friends about female creativity. In reversing the muse it became an experiment. As a small part of the global conversation about women in the arts, it became an obsession. It occurred to me that in 10 years of making records I had only come across two female engineers working in studios.
Quote Message: Starting from my experience of being a woman I began to ask myself what difference it might have made had I had more women around, if any. I wanted to know why progress has been so slow in this area and what effect it would have on music.

  13. Drugs in Prince home 'were mislabelled'

    Prince

Pills seized from Prince's home contained the dangerously powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl but were mislabelled, according to reports.

Speaking to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, officials investigating the singer's death said the pills were labelled as hydrocodone, a weaker type of opioid.

Autopsy results released in June revealed Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Officials told the Associated Press the singer had no prescriptions for controlled substances at the time.

According to the Star Tribune report, the musician weighed just 50kg (8 stone) at the time of his death and had significantly more than a fatal dose of fentanyl in his system.
