    4) A driver was fined for driving the WRONG WAY down the M621 at Leeds - and the picture tells the story.

    5) Could a trans-Pennine tunnel help the M62 run a bit faster?

  5. Gold for the Brownlee brothers - in Leeds!

They've won gold and silver in Rio - but Leeds is going gold for the amazing pair.

In honour of Alistair and Jonny's Olympic achievements Leeds Civic Hall will turn gold tomorrow night!

Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor Judith Blake, said: “What more can be said about the amazing achievements of Alistair and Jonny, who again have enjoyed medal winning success in the Olympic triathlon event.

“We are so proud and fortunate to have in Alistair and Jonny not just two unbelievable athletes, but also people who are wonderful ambassadors for Leeds.

"In winning gold once again, Alistair is the first athlete ever to retain their triathlon Olympic title which is a sensational feat, while Jonny with his silver medal, has also cemented his place as one of the sport’s greatest ever competitors."

“Team GB are enjoying another brilliant Olympics, and it is amazing to see so many of our athletes flying the flag for Leeds and Yorkshire so proudly in Rio.”

  6. Reaction the Brownlees' achievement

Sir Alan Langlands, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds, where both Alistair and Jonny studied for degrees and still use the campus facilities to train, said: “There could not be a better result for the Brownlees or for our city than seeing a Leeds gold and silver result in the triathlon.

"The university has played a significant role in their development and training since they studied with us, and I am delighted for both of them.

"I’d also like to pay tribute to Gordon Benson, who reached Olympic standard while studying for a demanding degree. He’s played an important role in helping the Brownlees achieve the success they have and deserves credit."

  7. Two West Yorkshire care homes in special mesures

Two West Yorkshire care homes have been deemed "inadequate" by the Care Quality Commission. The watchdog has put Millfields Residential Care Home in Pontefract into special measures - along with West Ridings Residential and Nursing Home in Wakefield.

    West Ridings care home

Inspectors said they were "very concerned that vulnerable people were not being kept safe" at the Millfields site in Pontefract.

There was no lock on the front door, a glass panel in an external fire door was smashed, equipment and furniture was in need of repair and there was a lack of cleanliness and a bad odour throughout the building.

For the Wakefield site, it's the second time the West Ridings Residential and Nursing Home has been named-and-shamed for failing to meet regulations. A shortage of staff and a lack of knowledge of how to use equipment were two areas raised.

  8. Well done Marcus!

Marcus Ellis from Huddersfield and Chris Langridge have won bronze in the men's doubles badminton!

It was an attacking masterclass from the Brits.

    21-18 19-21 21-10 the final score.

  9. Case dropped over 'offensive message' days after Jo Cox killing

A man accused of posting a threatening message on a Conservative MP's Facebook page, just days after the killing of West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox, has had the case against him dropped.

Mark Verier from Ramsgate in Kent had faced one count of sending grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing communications.

The post on MP Craig Mackinlay's page in June included gun and knife emojis, with the message: "Another MP that needs..."

He told police the post was a joke, albeit a sick one. Following a review the CPS has concluded that the comment did not meet the bar of being grossly offensive.

  11. West Yorkshire Police to be investigated over dog attack

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is to investigate West Yorkshire Police over the death of a man killed by a dog

    David Ellam

David Ellam suffered bites to his body on Riddings Road in the Sheepridge area of Huddersfield on Monday morning and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Police had seized the dog in June on suspicion it was a banned pit bull breed, but returned it last Wednesday.

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said: "Our independent investigation will look closely at police actions prior to Mr Ellam's death, including the decision-making around the removal, testing and return of the dog."

A man's been arrested over the incident.

  12. Brownlee brothers cleared for take-off

    BBC Sport

    Brownlee brothers in Rio

Alistair and Jonny Brownlee have been training at a Brazilian military base ahead of their tilt for a triathlon one-two this afternoon, using the runway to run and cycle away from prying eyes and heavy traffic.

"After everything else, the thing it took to persuade the military to let us use it was the installation of a new dishwasher for the officers’ mess," UK Sports' performance director Simon Timson told the Daily Mail.

"For the price of that, the triathlon team are able to complete their preparations in the best way possible."

  14. Asda report worse quarter on record

    BBC Business News

Leeds-based supermarket group Asda has reported its worst quarterly performance on record.

    ASDA

The Walmart-owned chain posted a 7.5% fall in like-for-like sales in the second quarter.

The results represent the eighth consecutive quarter of sliding sales.

New boss Sean Clarke, who took over on 11 July, is attempting to turn Asda around through a £1.5bn investment in price cuts amid a brutal price war in the supermarket sector.

  15. O no, where have all the As and Bs gone?

You might have noticed that big brands and public organisations have been dropping letters from their logos, a bit like West Yorkshire Police...

Well the reason is it's part of a campaign to encourage people to donate blood.

NHS Blood and Transplant has launched a worldwide campaign asking people to show support by dropping the letters of the main blood groups from their name and posting it on social media.

It really isn't the sort of thing to do whilst you're on the motorway is it?
